I agree Bill that the quality control may have been very variable over the years at Formit and I probably just got lucky to get a dry hull. You will recall that my boat has an owner fit out with no glass lining. It is quite different to other Top Hats I have seen. Perhaps the first owner was specific about the layup? Who knows? I am just happy not have any osmosis in the old boat.

PS Had a great surf at Box Head this morning. That must be one of the longest waves in Aus.

I watched Swanson Brothers mould many yachts ,and their started moulding fibreglass boats from day one .Yes some had bubbles and some didn't .It's a good chance some weekend cowboy moulded the hull and wouldn't listen to the experts ,seen that more than once . Some East Coast 31 have bubbles none of them where amateur built. Jilpanger was all amateur built and had no bubbles until 35 years later .Egret II, 41 years old found 2 little blisters on her last slipping along with some very hard lumps the size of 20 cent pieces .The shipwright said ,their not osmosis bubbles and anyway what do expect from a boat at 41 years of age and has spent most that 40 years floating in water.I've played around with boats all my life from wooden toy yachts up to 40 footers and like a wise boatbuilder said to me ."wood gets rot or worm ,steel rusts ,aluminium electrolysis and fibreglass osmosis ,so bloody what ,so you fix it !!

Don't worry you Formit Top Hat owners I haven't seen any of their loo's with osmosis :D

Funny thing was that I only had osmosis on the port side, must have been a bad day.

That is odd, mine is all on the port side except for one or two bumps.

What I have noticed with this osmosis is that a significant number of the 100 or so lumps have been treated before and have grown back. Can see the different colour of the epoxy used to repair circular areas and slight dimpling where the ground-out areas were not faired fully smooth. New lumps coming up right in the middle of the dimples.

Didn't have time on the slip to do anything with the osmosis so will need to organise to get Windchaser up and get into the grinding some time down the track. However, while I think it easy enough to do a quick grind and fill, the fact that many of the bumps have had treatment before and not been long term successful means I will put some time and effort into the prep work so hopefully it will last longer.
