Hi Everyone, Just signed up after I saw your post.
I'm sit' in Launceston, Tasmania. I'm planning my first trip to Flinders for two weeks from Boxing day this year. Boxing day, simply because I work for the Tassie Gov on a team and it's the only time I can get three weeks holidays owed to me.
So, I'm planning similar thing. Depending on weather we might use the East Coast as a contin' down towards Hobart.
I don't have a lot of experience. I purchased my first yacht in Sept from Adelaide and sailed it down from there. Fantastic trip my son and I had, though it twice got rough and we spent a few days just hanging in Bass Straight waiting for the weather to calm so we could make for the Tamar River. Most of my experience prior to that was in small motor boats like a midnight marina.
I'm currently doing our boat up ready for this trip. Lot's of cleaning, rebuilding engine bay (as it was filthy) and fitting cold water tanks to her. Wife demands a shower too.
It might all T up that we can all meet up in Flinders somewhere or Wine Glass Bay.

How are the interested people going with this proposed cruise in company to Tassie?

I am still intending to leave "from" this Boxing Day....
Am building a house, which I hope to complete by summer, so should be due for a break by then.

cheers

Hi Shaun,

Still gathering info and have a lot to read.

The best direction is anti-clockwise for the circumnavigation of Tassie but I think I may head for Hobart first to see the Timber Boat Show in early February. May mean a bit of a weather wait to get around the bottom of Tassie, but I can handle that. This way will also pick up drjasper if he is still in the area. See post below.

I have identified several jobs that need to be done to SEAKA before I can go, such as refit or replace the deck sail tracks, fit the new 100w solar panel, [the new switch/fuse panel went in yesterday] and do a major service on the Nanni Inboard.

In fact I may remove the Nanni as I need to replace the forward engine mounts and it may be just as quick to remove it, have it serviced and then replace it than trying do a service onboard.

There are special requirements for VIC and TAS maritime that I will have to put onboard as well.

For the next couple or three months I will be building brownie points as Nancy [SWMBO] and I are taking off to Yiyili [in WA, 10 points to anybody who knows where that is without looking at a map!] with the caravan to visit a friend who is the council CEO there.

Sailing after Boxing Day 2012 is still on for me.
:D :D

Hi Philip it may pay to strengthen those mounts as much as you can there have been a few boats in those waters down south who have had an engine come adrift in bad weather and as you know if there is one place you can get caught out it is down there

Don't worry Bill,

The engine mounts are built to take about a 30hp engine!!!!!

In fact I'm going to cut out some of the stuff out because it's not doing anything but taking up space.

On the Wallaby, you all know where.

Tasmania next month in 2013

Postby Phillip » Wed Dec 05, 2012 10:47 pm

Ok Guys, Crunch Time! ITS ALL ON NEXT MONTH!!
So, Tom, Andy, Austin, Kevin,Ted, Mark, Greg, Austin and Shaun, we need to get our collective acts together so we will know where each of us will be over the next couple of months.
I will be leaving here as soon as I can after New Year’s day. I know that should suit Shaun, so we could get out of here together.
I have a plan [which will of course be useless after we set sail] for the first legs down to Deal Island. It involves about 15 days sailing but allowance will have to be made for weather and rest days.
Based on 4.5Knots.
Camden Haven to Port Stephens: 80nm over 18hrs
Port Stephens to Broken Bay: 75nm over 17hrs
Broken Bay to Sydney: 20nm over 5hrs
Sydney to Port Hacking: 20nm over 5hrs
Port Hackingto Jervis Bay: 70nm over 15hrs
Jervis Bay to Batemans Bay: 50nm over 11 hrs
Batemans Bay to Bermagui: 45nm over 10hrs
Bermagui to Eden: 45nm over 10hrs
Eden to Gabo Island: 35nm over 8hrs
Gabo Island to Lakes Entrance: 110nm over 24hrs
Lakes Entrance to Refugee Bay: 100nm over 22hrs
Refugee Bay to Kent Group: 25nm over 6hrs
Kent Group to Deal Island: 5nm over 6hrs
Deal Island to Flinders Lady Baron: 85nm over 19hrs
[An alternative is: Lakes Entrance to Kent Group or Deal Island: 100nm over 22hrs]

That’s 785nm over 175 sailing hours. Hobart is another 250nm over 6 or 7 days sailing because of things to see.

This hopefully will give us plenty of time to be in Hobart for the Timber Boat Show on the 9th & 10th February which are the only constraining dates.

If anyone has alternatives to this please come back urgently as we only have a couple of weeks before Xmas. Hope you can all still make part or all of the adventure!

If I have missed anyone that is interested in coming along, please PM me soonest. :D

Gday Phil,
Im still on to leave first weather window after New Year's day also.

Wow, this is now very tempting, although I doubt I could have Dulcamara ready for a trip such as this, or get the required time away from home. a little too much going on around then.

So, as an alternative, I could crew a day or two for you guys on one or two of the legs between Port Stephens and Batemans Bay, plus we should hook up in Pittwater for a raft up when you're here.
