Sydney mooring options?

Pelagian will need a new mooring soon, and I'm wondering if any Hatters have advice on available locations in Sydney Harbour? Having read recent comments about the Death Cats, I'd apppreciate a bit of local knowledge on options.

Did you consider Pittwater? No, it's not the harbour, but there are a lot of great mooring options, as well as a much wider area for cruising around.

If you want the harbour, try looking around Lan Cove River, or Tarban Creek. Five Dock Bay isn't bad either, just steer clear of the main channel of the Parramatta River.

Middle Harbour is also nice, but you need to consider the Spit Bridge opening times of you're west of the bridge.

Stay anywhere west of the harbour bridge because the mooring fees are much cheaper. Lane cove river is a very protected location for all drirections because it doesnt have to much fetch. As I just got my mooring in Tamborine Bay, there now is no waiting list but i think the bay is full, Alexander bay has a waiting list of 4, Woodford bay has a waiting list of 11 and yacht bay has a waiting list of 3. The boats in the bay do turn over pretty fast.

There are moorings available in Tarban Creek.
Including my old one as I have just handed it back.

One of the many great things about Middle Harbour is that within 30 minutes your outside ,no ferries etc !
The Spit Bridge isn't really a problem it teaches you time management !!
I have a mate who lives in Rozelle ,and he had his boat moored behind me in Quakers Hat Bay and that was one of the reasons plus all the good picnic spots are up this end of the harbour ?

Thanks for the advice... I agree that Pitwater is stunning & middle harbour also appeals, but I live in Canberra & initially think I'll look at Lane Cove area, as I come in along the M5.

Take into consideration how noisy, exposed and bumpy your mooring will be as living in Canberra it is likely you will sleep on the mooring a bit.
What looks reasonable on a winters day can be deceiving as Christmas party boats make a lot of noise and bumps. Also check the wake from ferries.

Not wishing to be a smart A#$& but have you considered Pt Hacking. The old home port.
There were quite a few people from outer sydney that had boats there. They were from The Blue mountains, Picton, Bulli etc. There are no commercial craft to speak of, access to the oceanis only 2 miles from Cronulla, no bars (if west of Burraneer pt.)no industry. Lots of places to see up the river, well two only, South West arm and the Hacking River. You don't have to drive across Sydney to get there.
You can make short ocean journeys to Botany Bay or stay at Jibbon, as Alan Lucas said the best open roadstead anchorage on the east coast. The water is clean, the locals are friendly. Or should that be the locals are clean.
And you'll have a neighbour, Irishwolf, and a few others.
Worth considering?

Not Smartaaaa at all! I have thought about Port Hacking... I've even thought of moving!
From Canberra, North Sydney, Lane Cove & Port Hacking are all within 10 minutes in terms of driving time (3.05 to 3.15). Pittwater south (Church Point) is 3.45, and Pittwater North side is 4.00 because its mainly freeway. Realistically, Sydney times can extend out 45 minutes depending on peak hours etc. On the upside, I work shifts so can often take 3 days off mid week - traffic off and on the water's quieter, and the weather's always better mid week:)
And of course, the final decision will also depend on what's available...

Hi Rod,

Diana is quite correct about the concern you experience when your boat is moored in an exposed area and you are at a distance fretting over her safety when you hear the news reports of wild weather. Tarban Creek is very protected but if you want to be closer to the Harbour Bridge, you should inquire about Gore Cove (Wollstonecraft), the only downside being that the Shell tankers berth in there. I was in there for years and it is almost bullet proof with Berry Island reserve to the east, Greenwich Point to the west and ample parking in a quiet dead end street that leads to the park. There is water on tap in the park and a toilet block. Dinghys have to be secured on shore, although there is a community boat shed that you can buy into when a space becomes available. At least the North Sydney Council doesn't charge for storing your dinghy on shore like Pittwater!
Wherever you select, there will be a priority list so you will have to check the situation with Sydney Maritime and, if you want to nominate a number of options, you will have to submit separate application forms and lodge the standard fee of $192 for each application.
