Furlers?

Furlers?

Postby Phillip » Thu Jan 19, 2017 9:27 pm

Just about to make a final decision on a furler and thought I'd check on what every body else has and is it OK?

I'm looking at a Profurler C290, but will change my mind if convinced otherwise.
My sail maker is sourcing the cloth for a new fore sail in the April sales.

Any comments welcome :D

The Furlex comes with a forestay as part of the setup.

Hi Phillip,
Just wanted to ask which furler you decided to fit and any feedback.
I'm about to bite the bullet on a furler and any observations would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Profurler C290

Should have done it when I first brought SEAKA in 2005.

Best thing I did, makes solo sailing 100% easier.

Now in Mooloolaba for a week, coming out for one day for mechanical repairs,

Was the installation fairly straight forward Phil?

Yes, I did it at a wharf.
Dropped the fore stay, marking where the tension nuts were first and checking tension in fore and back stays.
Assembled the whole lot on a plastic sheet so I didn't loose any parts.
Two of us did it but I grabbed 3 onlookers to help with keeping the foil straight as we hauled it up.
Used a gauge to check back stay tension and took up there with half a turn.
Oh, and read and re-read the instructions so you get it clear what has to be done.

Seaka is sitting in Mooloolaba till next Thursday when we go up At Laurie's shipyard for stuffing box repair and and an engine alignment.

I've got a Profurl.
I installed it 25years ago. It's got a padded luff sail so the sail keeps its shape when furled. You can only furl it down one size, after that it loses its shape.
You'll find all sorts of ways to use it. Running in a rolling sea you can adjust the clew to just in front of the mast, furl the sail so it's sheeted tight and it'll stop the boat rolling.
