Electric Outboards on Top Hats ?

We have used an electric outboard on our Dink for a couple of years, it has plenty of grunt for that purpose. Having a dislike of 2 stroke outboards on Yachts, we are wondering if anyone has tried an elcetric outboard on a Top Hat. if so, did it work and what size unit was applies to the task.

The outboard we got on the Top Hat is too heavy for me to handle easily and it is just a matter of time before something goes snap. It does not reside on the transom. In fact out TH has had the transom cut out so the outboard mounts very low down.

All Mark 1's have the cut out in the stern for an outboard motor

Perhaps Mark 1's do, but I found the bit they cut out in one of the lockers, it was about 5" high and fits the gap perfectly, so maybe our is lower that the average. The top of the cut out would sit about 6" above the cockpit floor.

I was out at Seaka today but forgot to take a photo.
When I looked through my files I found that I did not have a photo with the insert removed!

Maybe another Mk1'er has a photo they can post?

If this insert we have was put in then there would still be a big gap above.

I noticed on another photo of a mark 1, there seems to be an insert that not only fills in the transom cutout but fills in some recesses around the stern fiberglassing. Bit hard to describe. We do not have an insert that fills the big hole at the back, the small insert we have has been roughly cut out with a jigsaw.

The next time I head to Sydney I will get a photo "a photo is worth a thousand words"

Ummmmh, does look very similar. Perhaps it is a standard config. I could not find a photo from the back but I did find this one looking aft, it should give an idea.

What does the insert look like, we do not have anything to go in there. Perhaps the cut out bit I found was part of the insert, the other two thirds seems to have been used to make a battery mounting in then port cockpit locker (it is now glassed in place).

For coastal sailing I would like somthing to fill the gap so waves do not come on board and fill the cockpit. Top Hats do not have much to stop the water continuing forward into the cabin & I like a dry boat inside.

They surely would be a standard piece that cover the stern , our insert is stored In our port cockpit locker , we will be onboard this weekend , so I will take a picture and post it by Monday Night , if that helps ??

if you live in Sydney Topi , I would be willing to lend our cover to you , so you can take a cast from it ??

You have the standard Mk 1 stern.
Can you post some photos of the bits you say have ben used in the locker, you may yet salvage the door.

PS. I think you should get a rigger to look at you rigging as that arrangement you show in the stern photo
may not be up to it!
