Mk2 or Mk3

Mk2 or Mk3

Postby Wild Rose » Wed Apr 03, 2013 6:41 pm

Hi all,

I have been searching for the drawing showing the size differences between Mk2 and Mk3 cabins. Can any one help?

So did that confirm your WILD ROSE as a Mark 3 Dave? :)

yes we did check and she is a Mk2 by the drawings. It looks like at some time in the past she was advertised for sale as a Mk3 and this just stayed with her. As she was a home built, the config of her windows did not help. So, Mk 2 it is, and we still love her.

Dave,
I supose I can say that the Mark 2 clan will welcome you. :D

That deliberate mistake of saying it's a Mark 3 to try and get more dollars at a sale, is also common in the year of manufacture
and I have seen claims that some Mark 3's were built after 1990 when the last one in fact was built in 1985 and only sold in 1990!
So that means that no Mark 3 or 2's were built and sold during the period 1986 to 1990.

Dave & Rosie,
Can you take a photo standing at the base of the steps into the cabin looking forward, & another of the front hatch from outside?

We should be able to confirm from the photos, & hopefully concur with the measurements.

cheers

There appears to be a little variability in the cabin soles even for the Mk11s. The cabin sole in Storm Petrel is 20cm at the bow and 36cm at 70cm back. I have noticed the head room is a little higher in Stormy than in other Top Hats I have been on. I do not think my boat is a Mk111 with 3 windows, but I guess the timber fit out would make it hard to tell. Are there any other ways to tell a Mk11 from a Mk111?

Cheers,
Mark

There is one.

Mk11 + one = Mk111

Mark,

From what you have seen of other Mark 2's, do you think your Top Hat was one of the home finished ones?

There are the few Top Hats that were sold as separate decks and hull for home assembly.

The differences would be in the chain plates, fibreglassing of the deck to hull etc.

I do know of a home assembled Mark 2 and I will check with the owner on what his cabin sole dimensions are.
