The way I read it, the Afloat article was saying that alcohol burning produces CO2, water vapour and heat, so no carbon monoxide.

It does use up some oxygen but if there is enough ventilation that should not be a problem.

I do think IanB's solution (the warm companion) would be a better option though!

It doesn't matter what fuel you are using- if there is not enough air it will generate carbon monoxide. This why the ceramic pot could be a problem if it reduces the air flow. My radiant toaster design lets the air in.
