Bronze Open horn cleat

Postby Robfaith » Tue Feb 26, 2013 6:17 pm

We've managed to bend the above cleat beyond redemption (please don't ask how!) and urgently seek a replacement.
This presumably was a standard fitting (200mm long on a base 123 x35mm with two bolt holes at 80mm centres). The best I can find is 175mm on the net.
Can anybody help a slightly damaged Ginger.

Hope this helps. Slightly amateurish at photo resizing.

Rob, any proficient welder would be able to repair that, providing you have the other piece.

If you were around the Northern Beaches of Sydney, I could point you in the right direction.

The problem with repair of bronze castings is that they are not actually welded but 'brazed' which uses a filler material with lower melting point than the parent casting.
Without sleeving or reinforcement the end result will be weaker than original.

Also open horn cleats do not offer the same strength as 'closed' horn cleats - size for size.

Perhaps you could approach a stainless steel fabricator and have something made up if nothing is available with the correct hole centres?

Cheers,

Tom
