Thick Antifoul

Hi Dan,
I will interested to know how you get on. Have you got thick, flaking antifoul? I was thinking about giving my boat a heavy sand next time I take her out, but if your method works it might be an easier option. Any chance of posting before and after pictures?

Cheers,
Mark

Mark

Had a look when she was pulled out, not a whole lot of growth (well none really) - couldve stayed in the water a while longer but oh well..

The antifoul is very thick 3mm - 4mm and thicker in some parts. As predicted by the shipwright it started to harden up / crack as it dried out. I took a scraper to the loose bits and got a bit off, they will be water blasting it today to get as much of the looser stuff off as possible before repainting and throwing back in tomorrow.

I have a few before shots but wont be able to get after shots as i'll be at work, will post them shortly.

Discovered 3 or 4 small osmosis blisters (5c coin size), but were only in the gelcoat and ran no deeper, they'll be fixed before repainting.

Now just waiting on the bill!

G'Day Dan,
have you thought about using an ablating antifoul ? I use ABC 3/Devoe/Altex all the same paint it has just changed its name a number of times. It has no buildup. It's like soap and the more you use it the more it wears away giving a new surface.
Come slipping time the gurney blasts all the unused stuff off and you just put another coat or two on, thus no buildup.
Likewise I'm up to slip soon too. Must book it in asap.

Sorry Dan,
I should have asked the question first.
I'm in a similar situation with the slip operator doing the work the last time in Feb 09. They used altex. I have some bonsai trees growing on the water line.
I just used a scraper like others did.

Not too bad Dan, but I ask again, who did the work? It's always nice to know where to go for good work, even if it is in the wrong estuary now.....
