TOP HAT HULL

Greg,

Come Come, our Top Hats are more kindly than that! :D

The ONLY time I took a wave over the bow during my trip north last year was when I had to turn into a wake from a large stink boat in Morton Bay.

If I hadn't turned into the wake I reckoned he would have laid me over in a wave induced knock down!

Remember I said that I doubted the maths on placing the weight forward as Illingworth did not specify that extra weight.

Gentlemen ?

Next time I slip Egret ll ? ,I shall take a happy snap of her waterline ,as you can still see the original groove /waterline in her hull which was in the mould. This line is about 3" below her now waterline. Now we must remember this yachts weren't designed to have all the crap we store on board, and 4 or so landlubbers in the cockpit ? Maybe that is why they like to drag their bum around the harbour ! And don't forget the 15hp diesel under the cockpit , fuel tank in the locker and god only knows what else ?

Bear

Phillip we do have Mk 1's and mine doesn't behave like a submarine .

Gentlemen, please dont get personal. No matter what yacht/ship, there is always going to be a seaway with a shape of wave that is going to come across the deck. If you dont like it, slow down, change course, or heave too. The T/H is nothing like the modern racers that positively torpedo through the waves!

Phillip,

Having read the same article, I was also under the impression that the hull was made in two halves.

As the subject has generated so much interest, I got in touch with Brett who owns the Top Hat moulds to get the answer.

He said that the hull halves were sprayed up separately with the moulds laying horizontal for ease of manufacture.

After curing, the mould was assembled and the join sprayed up on the inside.

After full cure the mould was split then gel coat applied to the outside join which was later buffed to a smooth finish.

Cheers,

Tom
