GME GP450X GPS

Hi all,

I've been tossing up navigation options. I'm not convinced I need a fully featured, mapping chart plotter (cmap mapping etc), but I would like something a little bigger (ie, easier to read) than my eTrex.

I've been looking at GME's new GP450X. Seems to be a general run of the mill GPS, just a decent size, good inside mounting options and a reasonable price compared to a 'proper' chart plotter. From what I understand it also comes with an external antenna.

Wondering if anyone has considered it, used it, or.....anything really?

Not a lot of call for marine GPS in Canberra, so not a well stocked item down here...

One of my friends I know had a hand held plotter, maps updated from the Garmin site. Something like this Nuvi. Price seems good too.
The Nuvi is a combined road and waterprof unit. I don't know much about the unit personally.
I've just bought a GPS60 from Whitworths, very basic, used for bushwalking and very handy. The software is good and interfaces to Google maps.

Morning All,

I'm heading for a cheap laptop (40GB 1700hz).

Will use a free chart system and plug in the hand held GPS.

I am also waiting for a cheap AIS to come on the market. Will plug that into the laptop also.

While waiting for that to happen will be using Crawfords and 'Beacon to Beacon' with the handheld GPS.

PS when using a pre Gps chart, mark the difference on your Douglas protractor to replot the correct position.
