POOL LINER USAGE WHILE MOORED

Postby DESIREMK1 » Tue May 01, 2012 7:30 pm

Hi All forum Members ,

Just wondering about Pool liner usage while your Top Hats are moored , enclosing hull inside of liner then dropping a tablet ( chlorine ?? ) into the enclosed water . Seen years ago when I sailed at CYC Sydney , on their sailing school J24 ...

Is this method of looking after underwater hull growth a worthy of consideration ?? , is it allowed by the Waterways Authority of NSW ??

Years ago maritime were sampling the contents of boat bags to check that they didn't contain anything but seawater. Even fresh water was not allowed.
There are a couple of boat bags at Lake Macquarie yacht club and I think they are effective in stopping serious growth but I haven't talked to any one who uses one.

I hope it helps.

Hi Greg ,

I thought by now , Boat Bags may have been more widely used . If they create a cost saving in the amount of times you need to Anti - Foul , then I thought they may been more keenly adopted .

Years ago Maritime /RTA ?? were talking about banning boat bags due to them being navigation hazards when left vacant especially at night . The other issue with them was boat owners used to cut them a drift when they got beyond their use by date instead of taking it to the tip . I knew somebody who kept his Farr 40 in one and put it out for a council pick-up when it got beyond it's use by date!! .Oh them greenies don't like them maybe because sea turtles think they are big jelly fish ?

Thanks Gentlemen , from your postings I gain their worth in practice . Seems like they have their place , though with Greenies becoming more prevelant , it may not be long before keeping a sailboat moored is on their environmental agenda ...

That has already happenend.
When in Port Hacking the waterways user group had a meeting about the moorings at Jibbon Beach. One of the greenies said the moorings destroy the "visual amenity of the bushland".
Waterways asked how so, they are only small pink bouys.
Greenies said, "But people come and put boats on them! " (derrrr Ed.)

There is a push to put in seagrass friendly moorings, they don't have ground chains and don't touch the bottom except for the block. Have a look at Jibbon beach in the eastern corner, There is no telltale ring around the 3 moorings there.

In the reef they were experimenting with a scew in mooring that is screwed into the sea bed in coral environments. And then there are fore and aft moorings, it will continue.

Anyone tried ultrasonic antifoul? There is a guy at Parsley bay who fitted 2 devices to his boat (about 35ft long) some 2 months ago. I haven't seen him around since and would like to get his feedback. Units (DIY assembly) are $200-300 from Dick Smith. but apparently aren't always in stock. I have seen favourable comment on the net, however, someone raised the issue of potential damage to GRP hull.
What do the sages think?
