Egret II has a working diesel

first time in 13 years

Suppose I'll have to learn how to motor on and off my mooring now !

Bear, that's fantastic news.... now you can motor out of the channel, through the Swansea Bar and sail down to the Basin on June 2nd......

That would be great, two Mark 1's together, I have got all the home clearances to go....

Only have to make a deal with the weather man to get Seaka down there....

But I'll be there regardless, with or without Seaka

I think you might be asking a bit much from Bear, Michael. If Egret 11 has not been to sea in 13 years, a trip to Pittwater might put the ancient rigging or 'Lazarus' the B-in-Trouble diesel's weak heart under pressure. What do you say Bear, up for a challenge? After all, Michael made it up there in his Mk111!

Bears news is a huge understatement.
I've followed through this problem with him. Initially he knew nothing about diesels and I guess like all of us he didn't want to know. Fear of the unknown, or knowing your limits.
However, he searched out information, and/or found people that could assist.
What really complicated the matter was that the diesel was supposedly overhauled by "Experts" that left out components, obviously wrongly assembled the engine and left off critical parts. One such part was the throttle stop bracket. It wasn't until the injector pump was removed that he realised that without the throttle stop bracket the regulator lever drops off the injection pump and shuts off the fuel.
He'd been trying to start the engine without any throttle!
Bear's been through the engine from the head to the sump plug and with the exception of the cam and crankshaft he's pulled most of it apart.
The upshot now is that he is confident that if the B&^^%$ thing stops he can get it going again.

I take my hat off to him. He knows much more than I do about BMW (Hatz) diesels.

Egret II might not had a working donk ? but that didn't stop her going out the Heads she is a Mk 1.I only ever used the iron wind maker it to get through the Spit Bridge and onto my mooring when the wind died . Even sailed her onto the slips.
Greg was the main surgeon behind getting my D7 working .Clean ,steady hands it was a shame he kept dropping bits and pieces into the bilge ,yet again at least we knew were they where when required!
Now regarding Broken Bay? Egret II needs slipping badly and that won't be until July so I guess no Broken Bay for Bear

We have five Top Hats here [in the Camden Haven], 2 of which are Mk 1's.

One is retired but mine is NOT.

Congratulations Bear and Greg! The Dynamic Duo have excelled themselves bringing this metal jigsaw puzzle back to life and it is a real achievment when you visualise two heads and four arms working together in the cramped quarters of the engine bay and trying to recover dropped nuts etc. Sorry I wasn't there to pass the occasional beer Guys because it is not just the engine that could have done with refuelling from time to time! Speaking of that, how is your diesel Bear - fresh and gunk free after thirteen years in the tank
