Could I get some feedback regarding motor mounting on Top hat. At present I have a 'lifting mechanism' on Mirandis. Whilst this is ok, it takes up a fair amount of room in the cockpit. how does everyone else mount engines, is it straight into the well and leave it there ? How do you them lift during sailing? I have an 8hp Honda outboard.

Thanks

Mike

Hi mike on our top hat they have cut out the back section from when it was
from the factory not in a well but right backon the transom when we put the
engine away there is a speacial piece that fits straight in looks like
standard transom cheers mate bill

Hi Mike,

90% of the Top Hats produced with an outboard motor were in a well in the back of the cockpit. Both of the Top Hats I have owned were like this. There were several made to customer requirements with a panel in the transom for the outboard to mount externally. On my previous Top Hat I used an 8hp Suzuki Ultra Long Shaft Motor, an on the current vessel a 8hp Tohatsu long shaft. Having had a look at your yacht when it was for sale at Manly I suspect the gantry you have is because of the weight of the motor! I leave my motor in while sailing - the amount of drag that it creates is not worth worrying about.
