Tophat with sugar scoop

Check out the Mk2 Tophat for sale ($29K - is he dreaming?) on Boatpoint. Looks more like a Mk3 to me.

I must say I do not hold with this sort of blasphemous treatment of Primrose and Illingworth's beautiful design. I guess I am a bit of a traditionalist, what do you think???

Quite interesting the way certain features have been modernised...the steps/engine cover is good, & I do like the sugar scoop, more through convienience rather than looks, looks very easy to get on & off at the transom.
On Blue Moon I step onto an un-used self steering bracket on the transom to get on & off, its much, much easier than getting on over the gunwhales.

Killick, if I was the person who had spent time, money and great care in preparing that boat to the condition it is, I would be offended at your comment.

The person who did the work probably didn't do it for the money, but to improve what is already a great pocket cruiser. He improved it the way "he" wanted it. The improvements make it much easier to board, clean, and move around the boat's interior. Sure, not worth the money if you're re-selling it, but certainly worth it if you're taking it on a grand adventure.

I do believe that the work on this Top Hat has been going on for some years.
If the owner is who I believe it is, he is a dedicated Hatter!

The finish is at a level that is expected on yachts produced today and not that of the very basic level produced in all other Top Hats.

I will even go as far as to say that the standard exceeds that produced in the four 27' Top Hats and they were a world above the standard in both the MK 2 & 3s!!!

As far as the cost is concerned he is spot on, I remember a similar finished Top Hat sold for around 24K a few years ago.

The cost of our Top Hat envelopes may not be much but the space around those envelopes is priceless and that's all I'm concerned about!!

And as Bear says "Mark 1's are the most beautiful!!"

PS. The way slipping fees are going, you may see trailers as the main way to slip a Top Hat in the near future.

I think Tophat prices have dropped 30-40% in the past 3-4 hrs. I wonder what he will actually get for it? I doubt he will find someone wiling to part with $29K for a Tophat, but I would be happy to see someone do so.

The chap who owns the boat and did the work really is a TH enthusiast.

He also works in the boat building industry and owns the TH moulds.

You can see his posts on this site somewhere and he has been very helpful to me with advice when was doing the bow repairs.

From the pictures and the text the mod's seem sensible and the finish really great.

The price is 'asking' so I would expect it do drop a little but not much.

That trailer would be really handy.

Hi All, I had a very good look at this boat and its trailer yesterday and am contemplating buying her - you will see now reduced to $22,000. Brett is a fair dinkum honest bloke and in the process of building a huge 45 foot cat, which he had built about 5 of before. He originally worked on this Top Hat as a keeper but his family got too big. The workmanship is impressive and he has strengthened the boat considerably. It is virtually a new boat. I really like the sugarscoop and it is strongly built and flows nicely with the profile of the boat. It does need to be wired up and plumbed. Some neat innovative ideas. The trailer is a tinker trailer and does need brakes fitted but otherwise is built perfectly to take a Top Hat to windward at 50 knots. It has potential to be loaned to other top hatters or indeed anyone with a 2 1/2 ton yacht. Brett as the owner of the moulds for the 25 and 27 knows alot about these boats and he has fixed the problems with them and modernised it. While I am not always a fan of modernisation, being a bit of a luddite, I think it has worked in this instance and that she is a beauty to behold and the suar scoop really works. Thats it from me.
