Anchor Chain Stops

Hey Diana,
Not sure what you mean about not enough power to use a powered windlass, but a larger battery isn't going to cost that much if they think your battery is underpowered.

I have a 140 amp hour battery that ran a 12 volt polisher for two hours straight and showed no real power loss, so a battery of that size should run any of the smaller powered windlasses on the Muir site. From memory, something like the Vertical Powered Capstan 500 would fit in between the anchor locker and the point of the bow and all you would need to do is make sure the rode and chain fed into the locker correctly. At least that's what the Muir rep at the boat show told me as he'd recalled fitting similar to a Top Hat some time back.

Check the rating on your battery and then check the amperage draw on the powered windlass.

If you want an electrician to help you out I can refer you if you send me a PM

I think I need someone with knowledge and non monetary aims to take a look at my system.

Any volunteers?

Diana,

I have a Muir manual winch on the bow of Seaka.

I only used it a few times, during my recent trip north, when I found that I could not get my anchor up easily due to wind or mud. I found it hard to winch in the chain, but it did come in and once free of the bottom I retrieved the anchor in the normal manner. [Hand over hand!] It is slow and some strength is required if using the full sweep of a winch handle.

Hi Diana,

Before adding expensive complications to your boat, I suggest a change of technique(s) first.
If you motor up (or hand pull) so the anchor rode is vertical, then cleat it off TIGHT, then let the motion of the ocean, including swell, wash, chop, walking to the aft etc lift the bow and break out the anchor.
If that doesnt work....get an old 30 or 40ft length of thick rope 16mm or so, cleat off rode tight as above, tie a rolling hitch as close to bow roller as you can, lead the line back to a jib sheet winch & try to winch a foot or two of rode in & repeat if required.

cheers

Hi Diana.

I was with you there on NYE and did go looking for Top Hats as promised, but I was at the mercy of my power boating friends who seemed intent on anchoring on top of everyone else on the southern edge of the group of boats at Bradleys Head! Hope you enjoyed the show. Having done it once, it seems to be one of those things that you do once so you can say that you have done it. The queue at Roseville boat ramp at 1.30am was horrendous...

Happy New Year Bruce.

Well some tips for NYE.

1. Stay overnight. Getting to a boat ramp after midnight with that many other people doing the same thing in my opinion is lunacy

2. Stink boat people????? What were you thinking.

3. Get a possie early, sit back with a cool drink and watch the other idiots.
By early I mean at least a day ahead.
This time I was only 1 day early. I prefer 2 days.
