$$$ value of a Mark 1 renovators delight?

Yep.

I would say that's an early Mk 2 with Mk 1 windows.
According to one of the saleman, from that time, that was an early option.

I would check for osmosis and leaks throught the mast bridge bolts.

Hi Bruce.

I agree.
Despite being told it was a Mark 1
It looks like a Mark 2 to me.
And FREE seems too expensive.

Hey Guys

It's one of the early MkII 's, if it has any L J Mitchell gear or Cannon winches or deck gear that would back up my guess . Believe it or not , Egret II looked looked 10 times worse when I bought her 16 years ago . I don't think she's that bad ? the mains a bit dicky but if the headsails have been kept in side they should be OK ?

New sheets maybe rigging etc ,cut and polish couple of litres of mould killer happy days .

Bargain

Since Bear has tidied up Egret II, that MkII now only looks five times better.

She's a wee ripper Di!!

As Bear said with an acid wash on exterior, clear out the interior (looks like a good ole' Treasure Hunt inside too!...nice oil lamps??), mould killer eveywhere..paint interior, fix leaks as much as possible, try washing all running rigging in bath??(looks like modern type sheets), metho stove will polish up as new, bit of sanding on timber work, sail bags(at least) in V-berth look ok, Spend less than $100 on cleaning products & Hey presto....back to former glory.

As Bruce said in his first post, you will have to do all the work yourself(paying someone will not make it worthwhile), & you will have to have somewhere cheap & accessible to keep it, do you still have two moorings?...perfect!

A couple of solid weekends will get the worse of it, just kit up with some PPE, & get into it.

Hopefully (this is where the gamble is...just like buying any other boat), the slip & antifoul wont open a can of worms, osmosis, rudder probs etc. But if its close to free in the first place, not much to lose.

cheers

Where do old boats go to die?

Postby SeaLady » Fri Dec 16, 2011 9:31 am

Ok another question.

How do you get rid of an old boat?

With an old car you take it to the wreckers.
Where do old boats go to die?

I am sure Maritime would not be impressed with sinking in Pittwater.

The other thing you could do is pull it out, strip it bare of all the serviceable parts and take them to the Boat Locker and sell them on consignment. The hulk would then need to be taken to the tip and crushed, which I think in turn would crush the old guy who currently owns it.

As Shaun said, it could be brought back with a lot of spit and polish, perhaps some paint. It just depends on how much time one has to do it. I'll PM Aaron, or email him, which I think I have. He may respond.

Bit premature to start talking about a funeral!! :o

But as you asked, I would do as Miker suggests, strip it sell what you can, rest of the metal sell as scrap to metal merchants, get the grinder or chainsaw out on the slip, might fit into a 4m2 skip, but definitely into a 10m2 one, skip bin mob would no doubt provide skip bin for free when you mention the 1.2Tonne+ of lead in keel @ about $1 a kilo scrap!

or sell as mooring minders on eBay.

or create new fish reef 5nm off Sydney heads.

Yes, it is a Mk11A (racing version) - similar to Storm Petrel, but looks to have a pretty ordinary 'owner fit out' and dodgy paint job. Does not look like a project for the faint hearted, in spite of what Shaun and Bear might suggest (they are both obviously renovators with lots of time and expertise on hand). It will still look like a tarted up mooring minder unless you invest quite a bit of time and money.

Diana,

I can't see any mention of the engine here other than that it has both an inboard and an outboard. Are either working? The comments re cleaning it up are fair enough, but the main costs in any boat are its engine and in a yacht, its sails and rigging as well, (which you have already said needs replacing).

If the engines don't run and you can't hoist a useable sail, this boat has reached its use by date!
