Gunwhale

Gunwhale

Postby Shaun » Mon Aug 01, 2011 1:19 pm

G'day,
There is no toe rail as such on Blue Moon, (there is a rub rail about 125mm down from the gunwhale bolted onto the hull).
It is a fairly sharp edge(where the toe rail should be), which makes it suscetible to cracking (there are a few small cracks with the gelcoat cracking away) & makes it painful to stand-on with bare feet.
I guess I should grind out the cracks....how agressive can I be in this hull to deck area? then repair it with epoxy??
I would like nice high-ish toe rail or similar as a sure-footed area to stand if I have to go forward, any ideas?

cheers
Shaun

I'll try to get a photo & post it up later

Hi Shaun

This is what I had in mind and cheap to do.
Marine grade aluminum angle sikaflex and pop riveted or self tapped to deck
Teak 1800 x 50 x 25 drilled countersunk ,fixed with metal threads through angle and fixed in position through deck and hull flange .Leave say 50mm gap between each gunwale timber .

G'day Bear,
Thanks for that.
I hadnt considered using ally angle at all & I think that would look very neat if done well. The angle would add strength when standing against it when heeling. I wonder if the angle could be installed without kerfing it, to get the bend required.
But I dont think I would be happy grinding off the complete vertical lip.
I'll have a think about it
Cheers

Hi Shaun

If you used an angle say 20mm x 12mm ,the 12mm being on top and started from the stern it should bend around with out a problem.
