Removing old antifoul.

What is the best way to remove old A-F after yard has water blasted the hull.
plastic scrapers/Metal scrapers/sanding machine/hand sanding?
What is best type of sandpaper to use?
What grit?
Anything else you think of?

Thanks, john

Best, most efficient, but certainly not the cheapest, is Salstrip. have just gone through the whole process of stripping, re epoxy coating and antifouling and a total hull respray. Cost a fortune.....looks a million dollars and probably increased the value of the boat by about $2k :). We do these things because we enjoy our boats...not because it necessarily makes sense.

Mark,

I just hit Storm Petrel with a 80 grit wet and dry each year but I am making little progress on the many old coats of antifoul. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get yours done and what did it cost?

Cheers,
Mark

Hi guys, Mark look forward to seeing how she looks. Is she back in Parsley Bay? Guess 2 weeks from now I will be doing the 80-grit sand. None of what I do makes sense, but I enjoy our boat.

Mark,

Had all the work done at Bayview Marina, Mark Barry Cotter was the shipwright. All done and dusted for about $8k. I had a few other things done, the original quote was $7k. Salstrip back to gelcoat, repairs to a few osmosis blisters, 2 coats epoxy undercoat and antifoul. topsides sanded gelcoat crazing repaired, fairing and filling, undercoated and 2 pack top coated. Just to do the underwater areas was about $4k. the next owner will love it :D. BTW raced today in very light winds and she went like a rocket

Mark,

Thanks for the information. It really did cost an arm and two legs! I look forward to seeing her at the next Top Hat Regatta.

Cheers,
Mark
