Waterproof mobile phones

After the great dinghy disaster at the HRYC Tophat regatta that drowned my previous mobile phone (and nearly drowned my motley crew) I have updated to a waterproof, floating phone. They are pretty stock standard mobiles, but the Ifloat phone is available from Dick Smith for $129 and they claim it floats and is waterproof for 30 minutes at 1m. It comes in a very attractive bright orange. I figure a waterproof mobile will be a handy extra safety device when coastal cruising and when rowing my dinghy. I have drowned my last three mobiles (don't ask) and am hoping the Ifloat will last a bit longer. I will let you know how it goes.

Ah Mike,

I have also lost mobiles but it usually involved the good wife and a washing machine ,
say maybe that's why the underwater standard is set at 1m for thirty minutes

But Mike, is that phone a 3G type with an external aerial port?

Hi Phillip,

No, it is only one of the old 2G types. I agree that it would be nice to have 3G at sea but I believe 3G coverage is really limited to big cities, while the 2G network covers most of the East coast. Nevertheless, I suspect the waterproof phone will sell so well (to clumsy clutzes like me) that a waterproof 3G is bound to follow.

Hi, I have a waterproof clear box that I put my mobile phone (iphone) in when in the dinghy. Especially for outside solo, I have it tethered to my harness/life jacket.

My dad bought it for me from a garage sale.
Best $2 he ever spent.
