Methylated Spirit Stoves

Methylated Spirit Stoves

Postby storm petrel » Mon Jul 05, 2010 12:36 pm

Hi All,

Any experts on metho stoves out there? One of my burners is not getting enough oxygen and consequently burning with a yellow sooty flame. Any help as to how I can fix this problem would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Mark

G'Day Mark.
I accidentally filled my stove with Turps one time and its worked better ever since. I turned the thing upside down and shook all the turps out. Maybe that will help. It certainly had some scale inside it and I thnk that might have been stopping it. Short of that ring Maxi Stoves, they can supply new burners if you need them.

How clean are the holes in the burner? they normally clog up but look ok until you have a closer look I use a wooden skewer and poke it into each hole makes a big difference :D

Well a good clean did improve the situation a little. Provided I keep the flame low, it stays blue but it still burns yellow when I try to turn it up. The turps solution sounds a bit risky. I guess I can wait a little longer for a cuppa, given that replacement burners are over $100 each.

The Turps solution was only the reason I turned it upside down and cleaned it out. I wouldn't necessarily recommend that you use turps to clean it, by the way turps makes a lot of black smoke.
i'd say your on the right track after you've cleaned it and it improved. Keep going, don't give up!

Hi All,

Well I finally got a quiet weekend and took the stove home to give it a real clean up. When I emptied the tank the metho was a little milky. After refilling it with clean metho and running it for ten minutes the flame started to run clean and blue again. Thanks Greg for your good advice. (Ahh, hot coffee with a dash of scotch again next sail!)

Cheers,
