diesel tank locations

diesel tank locations

Postby Sailtime » Sun Sep 04, 2022 7:49 pm

Hi all, I'm wondering if I could get some ideas on where those with inboard engines have their diesel tanks?

Mines right at the transom.. it's a stainless tank that goes ok but I'm considering relocating it cause I think it might drag the bum down a bit when full.. although probably only weighs 30kg or so when full.

Anyway, where do you keep your fuel? Where's the best spot? Can I put a tank up under the v berth??

I've got a mk1 btw

Cheers!

I have my 30 lt ss fuel tank in the port locker as far forward as possible.
This allows me to easily full the tank from my two 10 lt plastic fuel containers while underway
or when I have had to cart fuel to the boat. Also the best place when using a fuel pump.

That position puts it above the motor so no transfer pump is required.

I would not like a fuel tank in the bow as you will get a smell of diesel no matter how careful you are.
It would also be a real bummer to full in any state of sea!

And you would need a day tank, minimum of say 10 lts [10 hours running], and a transfer pump from any tank in the bow.

KISS principal applies here I think.

I too have a Mark 1. Had a look for a photo but couldn't find one.
Will post one next weekend.

Quite keen to see examples of diesel fuel tank installations if anyone has a photo?

Cheers

OHS (and E) would put weight on having fuel tank outside cabin. When the boat was designed inboard diesels were not rare and
the designer would have taken into account the weight of the tank and fuel and safe filling and spillage issues. You may find insurance problems if there is an incident and you have shifted fuel tank position. Largely it's a matter of 'if it ain't broke don't 'fix' it. My Mk2(or 3 still not sure which as first surveyed but for insurance, 1984 ) has fuel tank as shown in the picture here on forum. I can email you a picture if you want.
