Most Weight in Top Hat

Most Weight in Top Hat

Hey I am wondering how much weight you have put in your top hat. I am planning to see if a top hat could carry the amount of weight that comes with a long non stop trip. Any responses would be greatly appreciated. Regards Mick

Welcome Mick
My Egret II had half a ton of extra lead in her keel to make her stiffer and she did a lot of coastal cruising by the first owner and when I owned her she was always outside Sydney Heads.
We built Jilpanger(Her story is on this site) she was heavily constructed over 1 inch thick in the hull and extra lead in her keel and she floated just below the real water line by 2 inches
so this might help answer question ,but it's all about weight distribution

Cheers for the info mate. Half a ton of extra ballast Jesus. You would of had about 60% ballast ratio. Did the added weight make the boat any slower?

Ballast probly differ tween glass and timber hats, they about 2.5 ton , half ton extra brings her to 3 ton, where would you hide the extra lead,
From reading up on them them they have ingots with lead shot added then epoxy, water tank on top, if scratch building I spose you could hide it somewhere
