Ripple Too gets some loving

Prior to Mar 2015, my wife and I owned Ripple Too for 4 years was a fabulous little harbour cruiser. Sad to see the little motor ripped out was my main reason for buying her in the first place, hard to find small cruisers with inboard motors. The 240v plug you mention is actually a 32v low voltage 2 pin plug and was standard fitting for 12v outlets. The through hull fitting you found I think was for the LOG paddlewheel to sit through when in use, otherwise it was capped off. Anyways, great to see the little miss getting a makeover, she is well deserved of it. Best wishes in getting her back into the water again, pls post some more photos of the refurb, as I often wonder about what happened after I sold her. Cheers Kev'n'Lissy. :D :D

Hi Kev,

Thanks for getting in touch, I will post some progress soon, life has got in the way of boat work recently.

You are right about the electrical plug, the sumlog was still there but the paddle wheel was missing. The cap was in the outlet valve for the head.

You will be happy to know the old sole is being replaced with a new beta diesel, it’s in a crate at Dads waiting for me the have time to install. At the end of the day I bought Ripple Two because of the diesel like you did so wanted to put one back. I decided against rebuilding the sole as they are just getting too old now and parts will be getting hard to find.

As far as I know after you sold her she was owned by another member on here bunnym. When I bought here she was moored in Betts Bay next to the Huntley’s Point Ferry Wharf. I’m not sure if she was always there though.

Josh,

If you have time during the installation of your new engine would love to see photos of your progress. :D

I'd say its been some years since a Top Hat has had a new inboard motor installed.

Hey guys yep we put a new volvo in our mark 1 and its the bees knees.

Quiet.. starts when needed.. has a little digital read out. Highly recommend. The old engine was a lot of time spent sandwiched between greasy hot motor and greasy engine bay walls.

I looked at a few engines but the volvo fit the best in terms of extending into the cabin and has 2 cylinders as oppsed to the single cylinder yanmar that i was also considering.

Are you filling in the hole you cut for the outboard when you install the beta?

I do like the idea of the tiltable outboard like the atom dude does.. the interior cabin space and the no diesel smell are super attractive. Tricky one

Hey Josh, good to hear the ol' girl getting a new heart, the paddle wheel was on the end of a cable under the metho stove area, there was also a spare anchor under the head, I could never work out how to get it out whithout removing said toilet, lol. all the through hull fittings were replaced with SS except the log one. As you may have noticed, the sail area is much larger than most Top Hats, as it used to be raced by previous owner who had all the mast work replaced and the boom made much lower to enable extra sail area, there was also a very large No.1 headsail that I was hesitant to put out, she was a very easily sailed solo. Ripple Too was originally moored in Five Dock Bay North. BTW did you find the spanner I dropped into the bilge while doing a service during a howling wind storm. Good luck and please post some photos of the rebuild. Kev
