Update: under sink fresh water container

Update: under sink fresh water container

Postby Troppo » Tue Dec 22, 2015 4:26 pm

Quite some time back, I made the space under the sink more usable. One of the things I did was make a space for a 10 litre bottle of fresh water to slot in. A small 12v pump activated by a push button filled my cup or kettle. However, a problem developed so I have made a small but satisfying change.

Notice the draping hose.

The problem is the soft hose did not like sitting in a curve and eventually kinked in several places.

No kink here as pic taken when first made, but hose bends above the cap and it ended up kinking.

To solve the problem, I needed to take the curves out. On Ebay, I found the right sized food grade 90 degree elbows. Just above the cap of the water container, I used two elbows to make a 180 degree bend.

Using elbows I took out the curves that kinked.

The next set of two elbows went in where the pipe hangs down before going up to the tap. The reason I have the pipe hanging down is because it gives plenty of length to pull out the water container without disconnecting the hose. The elbows allow the soft pipe to only have straight sections, no curve.

The fresh water to sink system is now working well again. The only hitch was that I did not use clamps on the elbows and a little water leaked from the ones where the pipe hangs down. There is little pressure so I had not thought it would leak. I was wrong. I used four zip ties around the bottom elbows and they sealed.

Good idea Troppo. Also like the 10 litre managable size containers. .. while checking picture i noticed the thick bulkhead. Did you beef that up or as was. It looks at least an inch.

Notlongjohn, I believe the previous owner did that. He had the boat for maybe a year and did various jobs on it. A professional survey done before he bought it pointed out there was some "slight mast compression sighted in deck moulding" so I suspect he decided to upgrade the bulkhead beams to give the mast more suppor. The beams seem seriously strong and they fit well enough. On the other side of the bulkhead in the v-berth, new ply had been sheeted on the bulkhead wall. So overall this section of the boat had been strengthened a fair bit.

I had the same problem ;) with collapsing plastic.
My hand pump , purchased new 3 years ago, has never managed to pull water from the tank to the sink. This week I installed 2 non return valvles in the line + a filter. Success......except for the 8" of clear plastic 1/2 " tubing which collapses at a slight bend. Buying angle bracket soon.

Woodsie, sounds like you are almost there. I love it when stuff works. Getting it all to work can have its challenges. : ) With fresh water, easier to pump I found than be always pouring water from a 2 or 4 litre bottle stashed somewhere.

Which is what I've been doing of course.
