engine photos

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone with a diesel inboard on their tophat in Melbourne / St Kilda / Williamstown would mind me dropping by to have a squiz at their engine installation / mounts.

Any photos of any tophat inboard engines would also be super helpful.

What are the common engines in a tophat??? I'm needing a new/second hand diesel and am having difficulty finding how to get the engine mounts down far enough due to the bilge being so narrow.

Does everyone have their engine's pulled forward a bit into the main cabin?

This is the current setup in Felicite. Its a Volvo D1-13. It was moved forward by the mechanic to make room for the Volvo gland, which has been replaced with the normal stuffing box.

It replaced a Hatz, they were usually badged as a BMW Marine. The Hatz was a single cylinder diesel. It was very hardy, had a crank start and very low tech. It started first time every time. Their main fault was the "O" rings around the studs failed and leaked sea water on to the generator. The generator was under the flywheel and similar to a motor bike or out board generator. The water made the steel laminations rust and tear the windings apart and jam the flywheel as they rusted. I loved that motor, not in the biblical sense mind you. It had a polyflex coupling and mounts.

Felicite has the offset straight shaft. Photos are in the gallery.

Are you happy with the Volvo gland? Any problems with your cockpit sole access, like leaks due to flexure of the hull at sea?

I had the Volvo gland removed. They have to be replaced every 5 years anyway and the cost is near a stuffing tube anyway. Shell accumulates behind the gland and I was worried it would chew the gland out. Every time the boat comes out of the water the gland has to be pinched to let water through and greased. If that's not done the gland can burn out.

I havn't noticed any movement in the hatch.
