Pushpit

Does anyone know what grade stainless steel was generally used for pushpit on Mark3. Was it 304 or 316 grade. How serious is it if one welds 316 using 304 electrodes? and vice versa?
I will try to find out what grade the pushpit is and try to get washers, bolts and electrodes of the same grade.
I removed the pushpit and it is now at home. Both bolts on the Port side had sheared. I will cut all the washers off (lose 6mm on pushpit height) and weld on new washers and bolts. The old washers are 40 mm dia and look to be 2 to 3mm thick. There were no washers on the underside to spread the load, so i will fit decent size washers under and will probably use lock nuts.

Cheers, John

John, be careful adding big washers to the Pushpit or Pulpit. instead of just sheering off the bolts it might cause damage like that below.
Its like adding bull bars to Volvos with progressive crumple zones.

It was the thread which broke in the first place (and it is not uncommon).

It will be the thread which will break next time too.

In both cases with mine, and I can only speak from my experience, the weld broke and the stud pulled out of the washer.

I thought I'd not had a problem, I thought my pulpit was supposed to have a little give, until I inavertantly lifted it and found one of the studs was broken. The break I think was caused by the old mooring practice of putting the mooring line through the v section of the pulpit downtubes, because the anchor was over the bow roller. That's how the previous owner did it, so I didn't know any better. I do now.
It's now fixed with what I think is strong enough to hold a person's weight, but weak enough to not tear the front of the boat off, should anything get caught on it.
