The secret of prop speed is to get someone who is doing it all the time to apply it.

Reason.... it goes off in the tin and should be used within days of opening.

Remember, our props do not go fast enough to remove any growth and it is still necessary
to jump in and rub the prop over [gloved hand] to remove any growth at least once a month.

The good story is that very little attaches itself, not like an unprotected prop.

I have had prop speed professionally applied during my annual anti foul for the past 5 years and have found it to be much more effective than antifouling the prop. I can reach my prop through the outboard cutout and I wipe the green slime off it once a month or so with a soft cloth. After about a year I start to get the occasional small barnacle and that usually indicates it's time to have her out anyway. I do not like sailing with a fouled hull (Top Hats have a lot of wetted area and fouling really is a drag!).

On the antifoul front, I came accross a chap who knocked up a long broom to clean the slime off the bottom of his boat while standing on the deck.

Cheers,

Mark

Good to hear of those with good Propspeed experience, sadly my experience was quite different. About 6 weeks after being applied by the yard contractor at Sandringham, the prop had quite a lot of fouling. I have read that correct application is crucial, and I guess my expereince points to that.

moose - what is the product at Bunnings you referred to?

G'day Hatters,

My fathers boat had prop-speed of a 2 blade folding propeller when he bought it and it was awesome.
In my family we are mad boat scrubbers. Dads boat came out of the water on Saturday after 3.5 years only because of the renewal of insurance. All companies don't do 3rd party anymore if the boats on a swing mooring by the way! :x But it was pretty clean and only rubbed through on the waterline.
TRUST ME HATTERS!! Norglass Top flight hard!!! you cant go wrong with it for the first year we were wiping it with a car sponge. Personally i only think the soft is good if you have a build up but crap otherwise.
Just some research we did, if you look at the tin of the prop-speed it contains Zylene and Silicon. So we did a experiment on a mooring minder beside my boat. We mixed zylene and silicon together until it was thin enough to brush and painted it on aluminum check-a-plate strips that we cut and dangled them in the water off the mooring minders for the first 4 months you could lightly rub it off no dramas. But unfortunately it got towed away and they took our bloody experiment!!, the next step is to make it stick to a spinning prop.
by the way when i got the Dawn before the reef grew i use to use a standed broom from the dingy i reconed it worked well as the handle didnt hit the hull because it tucks in.

Anyway, all horses for courses :D

Rod1 & I spent a few days last weekend with the boats out, anti fouling and other work. Photos to follow. Apart from Cunjevoi on the bottom of Sea Monkey's keel, both boats had been pretty well served by their anti fouling which was done by previous owners so we can't comment on brands, but both were soft antifoul and neither had bee scrubbed in any way in 2 years. The pressure spray worked a treat taking off slime and light growth and limited scraping and sanding.

The prop on Pelagian just had hull antifoul which had moderate buildup, including a couple of high speed oysters:) No-one around to apply prop speed commercially and I gather its only for sale to the trade. There's a product called Pellerclean but I couldn't find a supplier. So, gave the prop a clean, some metal primer and a couple of coats of antifoul. Only after it was back in the water I saw a product called Propeller and Drive Sealer by a mob called Feldten Marine. It comes in a spray can so I picked one up for next time...

Rod1 organised a new front hatch for Sea Monkey, and Pelagian had stuffing box packing replaced. Both Toppies looked a whole lot better when they went back in the water.

Cheers,

We've talked about joining a gathering, bringing up at least one boat, but both our jobs involve shift work, and my roster's already listed till December. We'd probably both need a couple of months notice to confirm days off...

Rod,

I've tried the "Pellerclean" which comes from a supplier in Qld.

I FOUND THAT IT WAS USELESS!

Nough said! :x
