how much drinking water does a mark 3 hold in the tank?

Rob, somewhere around 120 litres, although I've heard up to 150. I know it takes about ten minutes to fill mine from empty.

The Mark 1 has around 150lts of water.
The Mark 2 a bit less.
And the Mark 3, a bit less again.
The shoal draft versions have no water in the bilge at all.

The reason for the reduction in water capacity is that the cabin floor was lowered in the Mark 2 and again in the Mark 3 to MAINTAIN the headroom.
The lead keels in the Mark 2 & 3 are larger than the Mark 1 [so less room for water] and the keel of the shoal draft version is all lead so thay can stay upright.

I have asked this before and no-one has posted the measurement.

Could two Top Hat owners [a 2 & a 3] please empty and measure how much water they can get into their tanks.

Rod, maybe you could you measure your Mark 3 please?

I thought it was between 80 and 100 I measured it when I was doing repairs but like a nong didn't write it down. I'm at sea now so won't be emptying it now.

I measured my tank a couple of years ago. It holds 90 litres and it's a Mark II.

i have a shoal draft (3' 6") mark 2 or 3 and it has a water tank beneath the cabin sole with head room of 5' 6" approximate capacity of 90 litres.
i have standing headroom of 5' 6" at the forward bulkhead.

Hi Phillip, I thought Marinka had about 80 litres from memory. My current boat, a Rival 34, had only about 76 litres in the same sort of location so maybe the English did not drink that much when crossing the Atlantic - water that is. Cheers

I think most if not all of the shoal draft Top Hats are of Mark 3 vintage. They are rare!

The only one I've been able to get on is Shaun's Blue Moon and he has no under floor watertank but he has normal headroom!

The fact that you have an under floor tank AND reduced head room is very interesting.
Unless someone out there can say they have the same fitout, yours is a one off.



When I wrote that I suddenly thought of Cool Change, a Mark 3 I came acroos for sale in Gladstone [still is I believe].
One of the things about that fitout was that the head room was really reduced and about what you are quoting
for yours. Cool Change may also be a shoal draft version, but the salesman didn't know that, so maybe your shoal draft is
the norm and Shauns' Blue Moon is the odd one out.

PS. Hi Peter, so you did finally buy another yacht! And yes I agree, the poms did not invent watermakers, so had to make do with what they had!

G'Day Peter, cans of beer do seem to be standard cruising provisions when you read the english sailing forums

I kept a few tinnies in a lower locker, next to the hull under the waterline, & became used to a can of beer that was a few degrees below the ambient air temperature, quite enjoyed it.
