Firstly, Diana sailing a Top Hat single handed is easy even if you don't have big muscles. Just make sure you raise the main before you drop the mooring, have a furling headsail and the auto tiller ready to go. I usually stand mid cockpit with the tiller between my knees and work the sheets from there. Trying to sheet on as much as possible in the luff means you don't need much winch handle action. Of course, it all takes some practice, but if Jessica can do it, anyone can Even getting the anchor up isn't that bad once you work out how. If you have crew and the weather is reasonable, the trip to Pittwater isn't all that hard either. I've done it in a North Easter, and while it took longer than I'd have liked, it wasn't hard or uncomfortable.

Pittwater is a big place too, if we're anchoring then we could do Patonga, there's plenty of beach and while it's a bit further by car, there is also a Palm Beach ferry there. I'd be happy to take a couple from Careel Bay if anyone is game to go aboard my old tub.....

Sound like the Bay will be full of cats. Perhaps we should keep the Basin as a venue, but change the date to the following weekend? What do others think?

I still won't be able to make it to Pittwater on 30/1 November, but do agree with Diana that a Sydney sailaway would be good - maybe around New Years?

Suits me because I am in Botany - so not too far and the wife will come -

It gives everyone a great reason (incl me) to be on Sydney Harbour in the lead up and over New Years.

Why don't we plan for one on 30th December in Syd Harbour too?

Well, here's a solution,
The Basin on Sunday 1st or 7th Nov. 2009
Sydney Harbour 30th Dec 2009
Port Hacking 16th Jan 2010 (Sat?)(would have said Botany Bay but not a good cruising ground as such.)
This would have the advantage of the locals in each group at least getting to know each other.

Just doing some quick research on the internet, it does seem that the seawind event is a very big do!, they set up a massive marque at the basin too.
So it would be very busy, & probably awkward to anchor/moor at The Basin.

Would a change of Date, or a change of Venue be a better option?

Lets narrow down the dates to either the weekends of 31st Oct/1st Nov or 7th/8th Nov.

Is there anyone who is going to attend (without their yacht) via the ferry?

Hi Shuan,

I would stil prefer the Basin as a venue. So I will vote for Saturday the 7th of Nov. for a first attempt at a get together.

I am not keen to be on Sydney Harbour any time near New Year as there are too many crazies on the water, but I would be happy to sail down later in January for a get togther.

7th November for me would be great. Anywhere near Sydney. I will try and find a crew member to sail to the Hawkesbury if that is where we are going to have it.

NYE in Sydney harbour is also a great idea.
We need to get into position early, to get a good spot.
My favourite is in Athol Bay just off the Zoo.
I usually get a spot the day before.... 30th. Trying to find somewhere to anchor for more than 1 boat on NYE with a view of the bridge will be near impossible.

Ok, changing the date of the get-together is the preference, to avoid the chaos that may be at the basin due to the Seawind regatta. This also seems to work well for others that couldnt make it on the original date!

Are there any objections on moving the date to
Saturday 7th Nov 2009 ?

Sorry but wont be back from Lord Howe untill the 7th but can make the 28th. I know it is later but the whether will be warmer and give more time for planning with the change of date. Anyway go with the majority and if i miss this one will try to make the next
