G'day guys,
Just reading this topic, and read about the hood 23 'Montego bay', my grand father might have been one of the last to see it. It sank at night during a JOG race, may have been to montugue island.
They saw flares and turned back, they saw the top of a mast as they went down a wave, when they came up they saw nothing, they motored around in a hutton 24, (Scallywag)for about 2 hours wth a stern hung outboard, the next day they discovered all the plywood bulkheads were shattered. During this race anotherboat called "whykickamoocow" (speling probly rong) also went down, it was all about 3miles off Coggee. yep, mid eighties about right. Think 3 or 4 people were lost, one of them a 14 year old boy. It was after this the YA changed the rules to allow clips onboth ends of tethers.

Cheers,
Dawn Breaker.

WRT the Hood 23 sinking off Sydney, at the time I was in the cruising division of Middle Harbour Yacht club, and the deceased person I was talking about was one of our members. The story I recall was that she was pooped, the water ran straight into the cabin, back into the stern, and the next wave did the same thing, and she sank fast. There was no mention of structural failure that I can recall.
