where to stow the door(washboards) on MK1

Postby Deepsouth42 » Wed Nov 23, 2011 6:54 pm

Greetings

Every time I open my MK1 up I find myself wondering where best to stow the precious twin panels that are the door.

I also envisage losing one or both in an unhappy overboard accident and having to work out an alternative barrier to the sea solution (one dark stormy night etc)

So;
1- where does everyone else stow theirs?
2-does anyone have a decent plan 'B' in case of accidental loss?

Many thanks

I store my washboards against the v-berth side of the forward bulkhead. I have some shock cord permanently fixed to the bulkhead that stretches over them. I have a spare pair of reinforced boards for ocean work stowed in the same place. Never had a problem with them being there- out of sight and out of mind.

Tom,

I have an arrangement where I store them in the starboard locker.

As soon as this rain goes I will get you some photos.
The photo prints I have predate digital and I cannot locate them!

Thanks for the advice; and I think the forward bulkhead suite me best-and I am surprised to realise that I never thought of that spot-my starboard cockpit locker is partially consumed by a fuel tank and the doors in there completely block access to the available space.

Can you tell me more about the spare washboard setup?

How is it mounted
What are they made of and
Can they be put in place and secured from both inside and outside?

Thanks again

Tom,

I store my doors in the starboard locker as I have my fuel tank in the port locker!

:D

My doors are a three piece affair, so they're small enough to be stored under the cushion of the port quarter berth. Sorry, no photos that would describe it well enough.

In this position, at a pinch, you can actually reach them from the cockpit if you need them.

The spare washboards I made up are just marine ply versions of the originals but rougher with a couple of reinforcing timbers across the back of them to strengthen them. I have clips attached to the timber reinforcing strips so the spare washboards can be secured when in the companionway (in case of a knock down) when in a serious seaway. They just stay against the bulkhead and I put the dress boards in front of them when sailing and fix them in place with the shock cord. I release the shock cord when the boat is on the mooring and just lean the spare boards on the bulkhead so the cord doesn't stretch. I have had this set up for years with the original shock cord.

Cheers,
Mark

I read somewhere here that the bed converter board from the front vee berth can also be used as a spare washboard as its the same shape. Mine unfortunately is not but with a little work it would work. I jam mine in beside the companionway steps it's a snug fit, or just toss them in the starboard sea berth on top of all the other crap that tends to find its way into that black hole.

I also looked at changing the insert in the v-berth to make a spare lower washboard but it is not an easy fit in my Mk11(racing version with head between v-berth) and I decided to just make a separate spare washboard.
