Anchor Chain Stops

Does anyone have an anchor chain stop?

If so what type and how did you install it?
Do you use wood or metal underneath. i.e on the roof of the V berth cabin and where is the best position for installation?
Does this help with manually hauling up the anchor?

Hi Diana,
A chain stop will certainly help raising the anchor chain, for the slot enables you to quickly slot the chain in for a rest, & to allow the boat to slowly come forward, or the action of the waves etc to help break out the anchor(when the rode is vertical), so you dont have to physically break it out manually.

I haven't used one of the above, so dont know how quickly you can engage it.
I dont think you would use the stopper in the above link to take the full anchor load, although they say its designed to take the tension of the windlass. I would back it up around the main cleat or post, & install with a marine ply backing plate.

My chain stop/chain slot is on my samson post, so very quick to use.

If you hit a big sea you are going to wear your anchor around your ears!

It's just sitting there and not secured in any way

You have major mods ahead of you!

Well your right, but imagine the anchor is not there!, I just had the anchor (35lbManson) sitting there while trying to work out restraints for it (btw couldnt figure out anything bombproof, so keep the anchor below, until I can trade it for a Manson Supreme), there's still something wrong.
I was kicking myself for days once I realised the problem.......

When I re-installed the samson post/chain slot/stop, I installed it back to front! , .......didn't realise until I went to put my mooring line over it, facing the way it does now the edges of the post bite into the line somewhat , instead of going around the nice smooth section as it should. .

I have to put a timber block inside the section so it gives a round larger surface area for the mooring/anchor line, could also pad the edge with some plastic hose or something.

that slot looks just the right size to store tins of SPAM!! everybody knows spam is indestructable- that is why real sailors eat it or you could use the wood and put a nice decorative figurehead on top like the dutch used to do on their bitts!!

Hi everyone.
Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and NY.
Sealady and I had a lovely few days on the Harbour and at anchor for 4 nights near the zoo.
Fireworks were awesome.

New Manson Supreme Anchor held manficiently.
So well that I could not get it up.
Was on my own, and needed to call Sea Tow to haul it up.
All it needed was muscles. Something that is often sadly lacking on Sea Lady.

So I am back on the campagin seeking ways of getting anchor up without the need of muscles.

It seems that I do not have enough power for an electric windlass and the costs of getting all that is out of my price range.

So I am looking at a manual windlass.

Have been suggested a Muir Manual Vertical 500

Has anyone had any experience with these?
Will they help me in my quest?

Seems to look ok on paper, however I would like to talk to someone who has one.
