Advice needed on backstay

I am planning on replacing all standing rigging in the next weeks and need some advice on backstays. Presently the backstay is fixed and if ever I am going to have a running backstay now is the time to fit one. What are pros and cons of the 2 types. I am a novice, but will be doing more adventurous sailing as soon as I can. John
