Storage

Postby Shaun » Sun Mar 27, 2011 8:24 am

Gday,
Im curious as to what you store & where?
There is a distinct lack of storage on Blue Moon, there is no shelf or lockers on the port side sea berth (MkIII), this makes for a wonderfully large berth, but I miss having that large shelf & lockers to store books etc, clothes, food, kitchen stuff etc. Im thinking of making some simple shelves in that area.
Do you have a dedicated space to store clothes?
Anyway....what do you actually store under the V-berth?, these are hard to get to lockers, as you may know from the unsinkable TH thread im considering converting the lockers under the V-berth to watertight spaces & sacrificing this storage area....or am I missing something that absolutely has to be stored there?
cheers

G'Day Shaun,
I found that white netting is realy useful. I have strung a piece in the V berth from about chest length when laying down to the anchor locker across the deckhead and its really useful for storing allsorts of stuff. Waterproof chart folder, towels, drying wet stuff, the sextant, cat o' nine tails etc. all the stuff you need to hand quickly and it doesn;t fall out! You can attach it with some self tapping screws, done in minutes. I ran a border of VB cord around the edge to stop it sagging.

G'day Shaun, Storm Petrel has simple open storage space and a shelf on both sides of the boat that would be pretty easy to build. I put cloths up forward in the lockers on each side of the V-berth and in the locker under the quarter berth.

I keep extra bedding, (for guests) in some of the compartments under the v berth. And extra towels. These are completely dry and I have never had a problem. Also have the porta pottie, loo paper etc and extra chain for the anchor in other sections. I have a section near the bow which is open to the V berth and there I store extra wet weather gear, extra sets of warm clothing and towels.

Sonia from "Curly Tops" over Christmas completely rearranged my entire storage throughout "Sea Lady" so now I do have difficulty remembering where things are. But at least the same things are now in the same spaces. Handy when checking how much red wine is left

Also have netting hanging thingies that hang from the grab rails. Again - Thank you Sonia. (What a wonderful present.) Which are great for storing fruit, fresh vegies, bread, eggs etc
All the stuff that needs to be removed each trip.

Learned how important that is when I left a small bag containing left over fruit on board for 2 weeks. Bag and contents now in fruit heaven.

Under seats on the starboard side I have more bedding, clothing, TV and in another - booze.
Behind and under seats on port side. Non perishable food, bags, books, tools, BBQ, torches, batteries, cooking utensils.

In the 5th berth under the cockpit. The one you would only put people you don't like has a cockpit table, Shade awning, boat hook, 2 life jackets, autopilot, fishing rod, recharge site for phone etc and also stores the storm boards when underway. Also safety grab bag, containing flares, first aid kit, V sheet, waterproof torch, chemical lights etc

The hatch under the seat in the cockpit, has fuel and other chemicals and bailing bucket. (I have an outboard)

Under the ladder (companion way) is wet weather gear, extra life jackets, wet shoes, battery and extra lines.

Charts in the chart table.

There is an open shelf with racks above the port side seat. For depth sounder, radio, both fixed and hand held as well as cd/radio crockery, cutlery, T towels.
I have one of those Wilshire stay sharp knives in a sharpening holder glued to the bench in the galley. Also easy for grabbing if needed in the cockpit.

Esky and drinking / cooking water in a big 10 litre plastic container live under the chart table.
As I only use the ice chest when going out for a few days. (Again easy to forget what is in there.)
For day and overnight trips, I freeze water in 2 litre containers which doubles as ice and also provides fresh cool water for drinking. Always bring at least 2 x 2L frozen water on board. Use the tank water only for washing as it tastes yuk.

I have more than enough bedding and everything else for 4 people. Have 6 adult life jackets and 3 child jackets.

Cockpit cushions and fenders, which double as extra cushions live on the floor in the cabin when not in use.

Detergent, metho, citronella etc live under the sink.

All works well.
I generally sail solo and the extra gear, bedding etc is really only used occasionally when guests stay overnight on board.

I don't keep extra sails on board. They live in the shed at home.

Thanks Greg, Mark & Diana.
Diana its sounds like your comprehensive reply was as much to help you remember where everything is now stored, as it was to help me  , cheers.
I can forsee a big re-arrangment of stuff on Blue Moon, I like the narrow shelf & storage on the Std qtr side of Storm Petrel, & may look into building something similar on BM, for the time being ive made some storage bags, & bought some Blue Performance bags.
I wasnt a big fan of swinging net storage, because it just reminds you of how much the boat is swaying around while in the cabin, but it is very efficient storage.

Thanks Shaun, You may be right about my detailed on board storage.

Silly in one way as today all I used that was on board was basics and cheese and dip packets.

Hi, I have a small yacht here in Australia and I want to change its bedding and other stuff. I am unable to get the exact size of the bedding. What you guys do to maintain your bedding?
