Anodes

Anodes

Postby Shaun » Wed Dec 15, 2010 5:01 pm

Hi,
Thought this might of been discussed before, but couldnt find it....never needed to worry about it before :|

While cleaning the prop, on Blue Moon the shaft anode fell off, theres another on the hull, just wondering what arrangements others have with anodes?

cheers

Hi Shaun,

In the past I have replaced the shaft anode when I had Storm Petrel up on the slip for her annual antifoul, though this year the anode looked pretty good and I decided to leave it until next year.

Hope you have a great Christmas,
Mark

Hi Shaun,

You must ensure that you have an electrical connection between your engine and the prop. That means if you have a plastic connection in the shaft you must wire a connection in. The anode must be connected to your earth to do its work.

G'Day Shaun,
Felicite has a long shaft and has 1 x 1" anode on the shaft. The skeg bearing bracket (bronze) is not electrically connected to an anode but it is painted and hopefully protected from corrosion.
In the past the anode has corroded and has slipped on the shaft. The shaft is not antifouled under the anode so that it gets a good electrical connection to the shaft. Don't paint the anode as it insulates it from the water and it stops it working.
Hope it helps.
Greg.
