Strengthen spongy port fore cabin top

Strengthen spongy port fore cabin top

Postby dism » Fri Jul 07, 2017 10:50 pm

Above the galley (opp head compartment) the deck has some give in it when walking around.

Considering adding extra grab handles (mark 1) side to roof square seems to strengthen other section of deck.

Or add some carbon battens under in a triangle tied into something structural?

Anyone else done this?

Want to keep standing clearance, minimal dark areas and clutter

Hi Dean, have your thought about stiffening up the deck by injecting epxoy?

Windchaser had a bit of deck in almost the exact same area which seemed to get a bit spongier over a couple of years. I did a repair I was 80% happy with which is a good statistic for me : ). In retrospect I could have done things better. If you do decide to do a repair something like this I can write more about what I would change if I did the repair again.

However, the job I did, as unprofessional as it was, worked really well. Note that when I drilled the holes, I realised the wood underneath was a bit rotted but dry so easy enough to put epoxy in. Didn't need to dry it.

Here's what I did:

And the general process on various websites:

See page 28 section 5.1.3 of the West System repair guide.

The following are just random web pages to show more ideas on the concept. I am not saying they are the best way to do it.

This type of fix may be okay for your boat. Hope you can sort out a repair.

Cheers Louis

Good info. Think slightly diff issue so have laid glass over deck to strengthen now to check if successful.

Great to hear you have done a repair.

Many of my repairs were experiments. I was always learning new stuff. For me, that was part of the interest with having a boat. : )

Please let us know how it goes.
