I spent a few evenings on the internet trying to work out what was required for a HIN. The Boating Industry Association identified they you could only get one after yr boat was inspected by a registered boat seller, and the HIN plates were only available from BIA in Western Australia. Sigh, about this time I was getting worried n frustrated, also because of the apparent crazy inspection fee...
Then found a few people writing about getting your HIN direct from Maritime Services / Roads & Marine. As I said, went along, filled in the form and left. Got my HIN labels/ plates made by a bloke who had an engraving shop. Easy. Obviously Bear had a harder time. It's one of those nationally consistent protocols produced by Council of Australian Governments that is implement differently in each state and territory:)
