Waterways do not know her current address. Or at least they didn't when I asked as they could not contact her.
Another damaged boat owner does know her address and phone number.
I have given this information to the insurance company.

Diana, your damage does not look that bad, provided you are not obsessed with the cosmetics. Looks like most of it could be done on the water. More difficult of, course, but not impossible.
If you really want to bring her ashore, try Portaslip http://www.portaslip.com.au/ Only trouble is that you will have to drop the mast and find somewhere to store, etc.

If you provide the GPS coords for your mooring, I might dust the cobwebs off my dinghy, buy some fresh fuel for the outboard, and have a look at it over the weekend.

Sea Lady is in Parsley Bay Brooklyn.

Turn right and drive past the Anglers Rest Pub in Brooklyn.
Follow the road around the left hand turn.

Before you hit the water or turn left to go to the boat ramp, turn right onto the narrow dirt road along side the cliff with dinghies attached.

At the end of this road where it turns into the breakwater wall is a small beach. (No sand at high tide.)

Stand on the beach and look East or to your right a bit. Sealady is about 4 boats out and just before the timber Halvorsen.

A very easy row.

Getting the coordinates is easy. Use Google maps and click on the satellite image option. Find your boat, and then right click on "Whats Here?" The coordinates are then displayed in the box top left.

Hopefully once you have a quote the insurance company will let you organise the work yourself. Or maybe they will say it is a write-off and pay you out, and then you can buy back the "salvage rights," and do whatever you want with her.

Had a look at Sea Lady today. It is not a big job and if you were doing it yourself you could do it on the mooring. An alternative could be to arrange with tradesmen to meet you with the boat at the pontoon. During the week it should not be a problem to leave her at the far pontoon for a few hours. You may need to repeat the exercise a few times, but that would be a lot cheaper than on the slip.
Needs the toe rail to be re-molded, and a new piece of rub rail scarfed in place. Easy to make a mold for the toe rail, as the inside is still intact.

Hi Diana,
I had a look and agree with Ianb. Damage appears to be toe rail, bow roller, pulpit and hull to deck joint. Possibly also deck damage where pulpit attaches.

1. Missing timber toe rail....have some beech routed, coated and fitted after deck to hull joint fibreglassed. Maybe your shipwright still has a piece.
2. Bow roller/furler mounting............tie a halyard to pulpit, remove bow roller and have it straightened and welded, then replace. I did just this and had mine straightened, modified and welded by Whale Spars at Peats Ridge.
3. Replace bow roller, then remove pulpit........have someone like Whale Spars straighten and repair it/weld on new sections or build a new one. You would need to accurately measure up the distances between the 4 (?) mounting points. If the existing one is repaired, ensure new bolts and washers are welded on. I removed my pulpit and had new washers and bolts welded on. I could check my records and find out where I bought these. I made a ply template resembling the deck to ensure the bolts would line up with the holes in the deck.
4. Fibreglass repairs to hull-deck joint and possibly also deck where bow roller attaches (possibly also some of the points where pulpit attaches).

Most/all of this can be done on the mooring over a number of days.

Suggest you contact John at Whale Spars and get his opinion. He might be prepared to remove, fix/replace bow roller and pulpit. Someone who is skilled working with fibreglass would not be challenged doing the deck repairs.

We wanna see Sea Lady out sailing!!!!

Insurance company has approved another shipwright's quote.
Hooray.


Thank you everyone for saying the damage is not much.

1st quote - nearly $12,000 - rejected by insurance company.
2nd and accepted quote nearly $8,000

With luck she will be back sailing by October long weekend.


I do have to pay the $1000 excess and 1/2 the slipping cost. Insurance company requirements.
Plus will have to pay for the extras that the cheaper quote does not include.

Yes found some extra bits of the original beech.

Am now thinking of going to the Small Claims Court to try and get money from the owner of the other boat.

Diana, I could be wrong, but if the insurance company pays out, you waive your right to claiming off the other boat, and it is the insurance company that does the chasing. Anyway, thats how it usually works with car claims.
