Hi,
On my old Arona 186 (10hp i think), it specifies C3-30 diesel engine oil, which means Premium 30 according to Superchip, anyway they & Repco dont carry it & dont wont to recommend any equivilent, What else can i use?

Bear & Tom-Tales(I think) who used to have Arona's what did you use? & why did you remove the Aronas?

There is an old 5lt oil container onboard that is "something 30" (I cant remember off hand), with a price sticker of what looks like $98

Shaun, it's possible that you need a straight 30 weight oil for diesels. I have similar issues with my Harley, it was designed to run on straight 50 weight and if you put 20w50 in it burns and leaks.

One thing is certain, you shouldn't use any old car oil. I did that with a Toyota diesel truck I had once and it turned to sludge very quickly.

Perhaps talk to someone like Penrite and see if they can recommend anything.

I use a Caltex diesel oil recommended by a mechanic for use on mature aged marine diesels. The reason I pulled my Arona out was trying to get spare parts for it after I just had the head done and gear box serviced,and I had a village idiot of a mechanic put it back together after it blew all it's internal fluids out the exhaust .And .....after taking it out of Egret II four times and carrying the bloody thing up 103 steps each time I decided to put a BMW D7 (Be in Trouble) instead (Want to buy a cheap Arona 8 only needs a head gasket ! It now has Fiat rings etc in it ,and seeing it's Italian it will most properly go faster in reverse ):lol:

PS Shaun, there not a bad old motor just a little heavy

The consensus I found was that diesels should not use multi-grade oils. For my Yanmar, I looked around for a good deal on the recommended grade of SAE30. It was hard to find (none of the motor parts chains had it), so I bought the Yanmar brand oil. It was, surprisingly, reasonably priced (about $35 for 5 litres), unlike everything else they sell with the Yanmar name on it! So one option would be your local Yanmar dealer. They also have it in 1 litre bottles.

Yanmar do not recommend multigrade oil for their old diesels(perhaps they run too cold?), so I also did the run around for monograde SAE30. I could not find it on the Central Coast (except from mower suppliers - where it was expensive) and eventually had some sent down from Minards Yanmar in Newcastle.

The people at Atlantic Oil were extremely helpful, but their SAE30 was not recommended in the old Arona (too high detergent level), plus can only get in 20lt size.
The Atlantic technical fella said, that while the newer multigrades are getting better, their detergent levels are too high for old engines....with the old SAE30 you get a small carbon build up in the engine , which is a good thing, if you then use the newer type oils, the detergents strip off this carbon & causeproblems such as oil leaks & using excessive amount of oil.
Atlantic suggested going to my local marina, will then try Minards
