Freshwater tank

Cleaning and replacing the hoses on my freshwater tank (located amidships below the sole). The outlet hose runs into the internal engine bay and then through to the galley basin. Reaching it will be a bit of a pain but I think I can undo the hose clamp and replace the rather worn and discoloured hose. What I can't find however is the breather hose for the tank. Does anyone have any idea where the breather / vent hose might be found?

There isnt one! You probably have heard the water suck back through the hand pump in the galley and the air follow it.

HI all, had assumed the water tank (GRP) in the sole of Night Cap has no vent. Greg, now that you mention the suckback it all makes sense. The inspection hatch seals pretty well. So I guess a vent will make the foot pump deliver in a more regular manner. Next time I am on the boat I will see if footpump delivers better with the inspection/filler cover removed and if this is the case I will arrange a vent. Anyone got any ideas how to fit a vent. Easiest I guess would be a hole in the cap of the filler/inspection cover, with small filter on it to prevent dirt getting in. Any suggestions?

Special hose is available from Witworths/Bias. but price for 10 metres drinking hose from Bunnings is $36 from memory. If access is an issues, you might be able to tape the new hose to old and pull the new hose through. Just wondering how old the hose on Night Cap is and whether it is drinking water quality hose.

Might be easier to fit an electric galley pump, for about $100, you can get a 12 volt pump with a pressure switch and a standard faucet tap. Works really well, and so long as you isolate the batteries when not on board you'll be safe from the tap accidentally leaking and emptying the tank into the sink and overflowing.

Afternoon All,

I use a foot pump, Whitworths 68155, and I do not have an air vent as its not necessary.

The internal valves of the foot pump keep the water up OK, but most important it works.
I also had trouble with the hand pumps and brought 2 before finally fitting the foot pump.

Good evening folks.
I have a MK 1 launched in 1969. I don't know if the tanks and vents are the same through the different marks but my boat appears to have a tank vent by way of a copper tube running up beside the starboard verticle piece of reinforcing timber on the main bulkhead. The main bulhead has a reinforcing piece of oregon pine on ether side of the door through to the v berth. Beside and hidden from immediate view on the starboard side is the copper vent on the v berth side of the bulkhead. It comes about half way up the bulkhead towards the underside of the mast step.
I know this is a long winded explaination and I do apologise. I can't quite find a better way to explain it.
Also, the vent on my boat may be a one-off. I don't know but would be interested if other owners have noticed one.

cheers

Austin,

Yep, it's the breather to the water tank alright.
Mine goes up as high as within 300mm from the cabin roof and is hidden behind the small timber quad.

Glad I didn't rip it out during my cleanup

John & I had a look at his mk2 but could not find a breather. Any suggestions from Mk2 & 3 owners :?:

Phillip.

Never found a breather vent on my last MkIII, but it could of been in a similar place to what has been mentioned above.
On Blue Moon there is no integrated water tank, it has either been :? grinded/ground out or not installed in the first place, & I find its a brilliant feature of BM, gives full 6'4" standing headroom at the foot of the steps & 6'2" in front of the sink :D , I simply use a 20lt water container strapped in on the floor of the fore-cabin, & have other 5 & 10lt containers stored in lockers
cheers

Shaun,

All of the shoal draught Top Hats, like yours, lost the above keel water tank
because they needed the room for the ballast :o
