drofin motor

Postby brucerp » Sat Jun 19, 2010 11:30 am

Hi everyone. new kid on the block. I have a 12 hp Drofin which has a separate clutch lever. Beast of a thing. I believe I have a clutch problem and not a gear box one, and need any and all info pertaining to this variant. Would appreciate any info at all. Cheers brucerp

Bruce,

I do not have any info on your clutch, but noticed this on the compass site that my be of interest. :geek:

Drofin 12 1/2Hp diesel.
*I was objecting to paying $30 for a 300x50mm spin on filter. Last week I got onto Gineico the Australian distributor and was quoted at $126.50 each!
The filter alternatives are:
AC X91
FRAM P4512
COOPERS LSF5123
FIAMM FT4664
RUGGERINI 17511
CLEAN DO315
SLANZI 407045
FISPA FOE191
SHUARA 50524
*Has anyone got any ideas on how I get a new filter?
*Have you tried this mob in Blacktown? I've had no experience with them (just found on google).

I had a similar issue sourcing a replacement fuel filter. I was getting overly concerned about replacing like with like, but when I had a mechanic service the engine, they used modestly priced Fleetguard filters.

Best of luck and welcome to the group.

Hi Bruce

In the past I have sourced parts for my Drofin from

Access Parts
67 Tontin Drive
Cheltenham Vic

03 9584 7788

They might know what you are after.

My Drofin uses a single lever throttle with a push-in pull-out clutch knob which has been getting harder to move.

Cheers

Rob

Rob,

My Drofin uses a single lever throttle with a push-in pull-out clutch knob which has been getting harder to move.

I had the same problem and applied spray lube from both sides until it became free and easy to move. :D

thanks Rob for the info. I have 3 control levers on my boat which are all located just inside the cabin on sbd side. 1. throttle control 2. a slide up and down forward and reverse selector lever with a neutral position between the two gears 3.a separate pull up / push down clutch control lever. It is this third lever {clutch) that makes the whole process clumsy. When clutch is pushed down (engaged)it does not feel as if the box is engaged fully so that regardless of revs, and knowing that the prop is spinning there is just a tiny bit of forward motion. I will remove the motor and will figure out how it all works, but would love to see some drawings of the clutch/gear box workings. Haven't come across anyone that knows of a separate clutch lever as is on my boat. I do have a poor quality photo copy of the Drofin 12/ M overhaul manual but all the drawings are all but worthless. Cheers Bruce

Hi Phillip. How I wish a can of spray would solve the problem. My problem is that the clutch does not seem to "fully" engage.... Whatever that means. Maybe slipping. Dont know because I do not yet understand how the mechanism actually works. Hence the chasing for info/drawings Cheers Bruce

Bruce,

This may be the answer. :D A friend (not a TH owner) who is moored near me sent this.
I have also sent his contact details as a private email if you need them.

"There is no clutch as such. In the gearbox there are two brass cone clutches, one for forward and reverse. They are moved either side of neutral by the lever mentioned. This lever has a rectangular steel block which engages the cone clutch. This block wears and falls out of its groove (hopefully clear of all moving parts) with this block gone the throw of the lever is reduced by 2 mm either way. So the gear is never quite fully engaged. Centrifugal force does pull the clutch in but it doesn't seem to work in reverse so well.
The block is hardened steel 10mm x 12mm x 15mm with an 8mm hole from memory. I made mine which was easy enough to do, but I do have the details of the importer who can supply most parts locally or with a 6 week wait from Italy."

Thanks Phillip. Info most helpful. It gives me a "picture" to work on. Have not had the info you have provided. I will have to pull the whole motor out and figure it all out, but you have given me an idea of what to expect. The sequence of operating the drive system led me to a picture of how it operated, but that appears to be wrong. Thanks again for your time and input. Bruce ILUKA
