Anyone Got A Windlass on their boat?

Anyone Got A Windlass on their boat?

Postby karl010203 » Sun Aug 16, 2009 2:47 pm

Given the weight of the tophats I have found myself using a lot of chain at anchor and struggling to recover this chain depending on conditions... just wondering if anyone has installed a windlass with success?

THe other option is to take steriods and work out a lot but that doesn't seem as much fun.

Thoughts welcomed

Karl,

I installed a Muir hand winch (it was a hand me down with a story  ) on my Mk1.

Seems to be OK but have not used it yet in a mooring situation
beause of the currents in our river and being a solo sailer.

I had to move the hawser pipe to allow the chin to enterthe forward locker.
Also placed a angled guide to ensure the chain dropped correctly.

I also extended the roller guides so that the anchor was held tightly but clear of the fibreglass bow.

HI Karl steriods option thats up to you.I would like to think when that 25knt change hits with 2.5 mtr swell pushing you on shore at 12 midnight happens.I hope to start the diesel and motor in to it and let the winch do its job and git out of there.I installed a new Muir but you must consider battery power without a diesel.and price. next time you are in brisbane call in i am just of the gateway boat still on trailer in shed in back yard. cheers brett

Thanks Phil - for the pic... :)

Hey Brett - what did a new muir cost you and what model?

I am definitely coming to visit... you won't get rid of me... just have to get the pesky work stuff out of the way... on a road trip for next week or so... did you have any luck finding a outboard well plug?
