Seems to all make sense. I was sure it was going to be an imperial size too, however, my friend who has my rudder drying out in his garage in Hobart put the calipers on the shaft and reckons its 25mm. The bearing calculator on the Vesco Plastics website calculates you need .24 mm extra on the id for best results, so the imperial size with the 1 inch id would be close enough to perfect as Nick found, although required some reduction to bring the od from 1.25 inch down to 30mm.

At this stage I think I'll buy a short section of 20 by 30 mm tube, and get the id machined out to 25.25 mm. Will confirm this when I get to Hobart next week and measure everything, and update on how things worked out.

Depending on how it goes, I might have enough material for a second set of bearings if anyone else needs to replace theirs too.
