hi just thinking if the inboard gives up the ghost which is the preferred side port or starboard to mount the aux outboard. i am thinking it does not really matter. also is it hard to plug up the prop shaft hole. any ideas out there. cheers rob

When I needed to mount an OBM temporarily I put it on the port side as this meant the OBM throttle arm, on port side of motor, had most free space. More of an issue was lining up the OBM bracket and crawling in the cockpit locker to mount backing plate. The transom is surprisingly thin. Might be a good idea to look after your inboard...

As for the prop tube, leave the shaft in and tighten up the stern gland is easiest.

thanks rod. i know what you mean getting to the transom. the old bukh inboard is running good at the moment. just getting ideas as i have had an expensive experience with diesel motors in the past. cheers rob

I have an 8hp 2 stroke Mercury outboard in a well. Long shaft, sail prop and charging thingy for the battery.

The 2 stroke was chosen at the time as it was significantly lighter than a 4 stroke.
It is quite heavy and I am getting lazier and lazier, so it is permanently in the water.

Being a single woman has it's challenges.
Inviting a strong man sailing purely for his muscles to lift engines and anchor chain pretty well guarantees he will not return.

This motor is now nearly 10 years old, and I am 10 years older and I am thinking about replacing it with a 4 stroke.
Much quieter.
The sound of a full throttle 2 stoke engine these days upsets my calm, pleasure sailing outings.

So can we please extend this conversation to what type of engine.

I've been leaning toward the yamaha 9.9 four stroke but I'm uncertain whether it will fit in the well

Two strokes are significantly lighter than four strokes, even with the lighter four strokes. I have a 18 hp Tohatsu 2 stroke long leg in the well and while it performs flawlessly, it

(a) is too much motor as even against chop and wind and towing a 11 foot aluminium dinghy I usually sit under half or just over half throttle and do 5 knots [7 knts when with tide] and

(b) the double pulley system is easier enough to haul it up but I have to turn the motor sideways a few degrees to get it up or it jams. The well has been enlarged by the previous owner who fitted the motor.

I know the Yamaha 9.9 yachting 4 stroke is a bit lighter than my motor and perhaps slightly smaller dimensions. I also know, as a mate has one on his old river boat, that it is extremely quiet. He had a Marina 4-stroke before the Yamaha and both his motors make me envious because I can hardly hear them running. Seriously want to try one in the well of Windchaser.

The 9.9 Yamaha would be heaps heavier than an 8 hp 2-stroke (sorry Di). Maybe a more elaborate system than I use with rope and two pulleys would be the answer to haul up one of the Yamaha motors easily and without fuss.

Fitting an outboard in a diesel powered Tophat requires either mounting it on the transom or making a well by cutting out the floor section and then finishing sealing the area. With the OBM (long shaft Honda 5hp 4 stroke) on a transom bracket I had some problems with cavitation/prop partly out of the water when in a choppy area, so much so that I headed out for another night at sea (it was a beautiful night) rather than have the shear pin go and leave me motorless.

The Honda was a good quiet motor, good on fuel, but I'd guess an extra hp or two would be appreciated at times. The other Rod tried a similar Honda in Sea Monkey but couldn't get it in the well without modifying the plate above the prop, which he didn't want to do.

I think discussion about Tohstsu obms with sail drive prop options (finer pitch) has occurred previously on this site.

My current 2 stroke 8HP weighs 25kg.

There is NO WAY I can life a 44 kg dead weight onto or off a boat.
