Standing Rig wire sizes & mode of termaination

Standing Rig wire sizes & mode of termaination

Postby Topi » Tue Apr 08, 2014 7:40 am

It is time to re-rig some of the standing rig.

The first question I need to resolve is what wire size to use. When I run the verniers over the 1x19 SS rig I get a 4mm forestay, uppers and a 5mm backstay. That seems a bit odd ?

So, what do other have 4mm or 5mm for the main says ?

Then I was going to use Nicopress ferrules to terminate the ends, the same as what is there at the moment. I have one supplier saying that you "cannot" bend 5mm SS 1x19 around thimbles. But I am sure I had done that before on our E26 we used to own. The wire is stiff to work with.

The term "cannot" is something that usually challenges me to validate the truth of the statement.

Any comments appreciated :)

Hi Topi,
It's tempting to use Nicopress but it was designed for 7x19 cable which has effectively a rougher texture.
So using that system on 1x19 will result in a sub standard termination.
There are other posts discussing rigging size on this site but I can't remember their location at the moment.
Cheers,
Tom

Thanks for that.

I tried searching for a few terms around rig size but did not come up with much, must not be using the right words.

What is the limitation of using Nicopress fittings on 1x19, is it strength, water ingress/corrosion ?

I figure that the fore-stay would usually be a similar size to the back-stay, both take substantial load and the fore-stay had the hanks sliding up and down and suffers more flex than the back-stay.

Topi,

My fore and back stays are 7 or 8 mm and the shrouds are 6 mm.
Going out this morning so I will check the stay size.

7-8mm Wow, they must be bombproof !

That is a lot heavier than this rig. 4mm did seem light, but that was compared to the Adams35 we had. The Endeavour 26 had a rig based around 4.8mm from memory.

Not really, you should have seen the size that went on a 28 footer at the same time as mine ... way heavier and costlier!

7x19

Interesting - that is more stretchy than 1x19 and usually requires a larger diameter to compensate (and make stiffer). Though that is considerably heavier. Was it done by a rigger ?

Do you have Nicopress or swaged terminals ?

I just measured some of the old wires from the E26. As it had only a slightly bigger rig the sizes should give me a guide. They were 4.8mm which is the old imperial 3/16"
