Cleaning cushions

Cleaning cushions

Postby Troppo » Fri Feb 01, 2013 7:24 am

When I bought Windchaser, the cushions seemed reasonable. I have washed boat cushions before so part of my overall plan for Windchaser was cushion cleaning. Here's how I do it.

With covers off, I put some laundry detergent in the bathtub, add water and a few cushions. Then I jump in and walk around on them for a bit. Amazing how much muck comes out! They're left for a few hours and I pulll the plug, squeeze as much water out as I can and repeat the process. After about the 3rd lot of detergent I just do rinses. When the rinse water is clean I let them drain, give 'em a squeeze then put on the line (not pegged but over the top of the clothes line). It takes days to dry properly even in tropical heat but they are much nicer to use. Oh, I just put the covers through the washing machine.

Nope! Not me, but seeing you do yours has given me inspiration!

What you have done is well worthwhile. I went through a similar exercise and finished off with Scotchguard. I had a mishap recently. Took along a bottle of red with the vac stopper in because we haed not finished the bottle off at home the night before. Of course vac stopper came out and red wine on cushions. Cleaned up well - no marks. Will not take vac stoppered bottles to Night Cap again.

Ah, John, I recall having a spray tin of Scotchguard around somewhere, I had not even thought of using it but that's a good idea.

And with the wine, probably better to take full bottles on board and finish them in one sitting so no half bottles to leak anywhere. However, after about a quarter bottle of wine my ability to pour from the bottle into a glass is diminishing and the danger of spills is increasing so for me better to just drink straight from the bottle. : )

Last time I did that the covers fell apart, well they were 40 years old, so I got new sponge and covers.

Very happy with the results!

Phillip, where did you get the covers from? Did you select material and make yourself?

My cushions have got a thin plywood sheet taped to the bottom of them(which is handy to keep the locker covers in place when I put a strap across the whole lot), the foam inside & the covers seem to dry remarkably quickly if I put them in the sun for an hour or so

Hi Troppo,

Yes I went to a local uphostery. Haven't got the bill onboard but I think it was about $100 for the quarter berth seat and the back rest. I selected the material from what he had.

The amount I paid seems to be about what others have paid. Do a search of the post as this has been discussed before.
