problem with 2-way radio

When I bought Windchaser, I gave the radio a quick check, seemed to be working. But on the big journey up the coast, it only worked some of the time and then not at all. I hate it when essential safety gear like this plays up.

It seemed like the radio unit was working but not transmitting or receiving properly. After checking it out more thoroughly, I found that the aerial wire going in the back looked like this:

Looks perfectly fine to me :o . Can't think why it would cause problems.

Anyone had experiences like that?

I have bought whole boats full of experiences like that!!! :o common method on CB's in cars and trucks, not worth a cracker on a boat!

i would recommend buying a new base and antenna, if that has been open to salt air it is likely there is corosion up through the shielding which is going to give you an poor earth and a dodgy signal
the GME bases come pre terminated and all you need to do after running is screw on the radio fitting
27meg or VHF base and 1.8m antenna will set you back max 70 bucks, has 5mtrs of cable and ive never had any issue with these on my tinny
