sealing deck fittings

Been sealing some of the deck fittings on Windchaser. I removed the stanchion bases (most of them) as they were looking in need of restoring.

I sanded them, then epoxied and painted with 2-pack. I used Aquacote as I can mix a little up easily and any left over can go back in the tin. Also it is water clean up if done before it goes off so if I am quick I can re-use the brush a few times no problems. Sets hard but not a high gloss, which is okay.

When I lifted off the wood base plates, I could see where water had been leaking underneath and the extra holes didn't help with keeping the inside dry. This pic was taken before I cleaned off the sealant so you can see there was not much sealant at all.

After sanding and wire disking where the base goes, I brushed with epoxy (masking tape over holes underneath) and then put on some fairing. After sanding, the area where the base was to go back on was flat and the extra holes were filled. I did get a little leakage of epoxy in the cabin past the masking tape over the holes but managed to scrape it off before it set completely.

I used butyl mastic to seal the base. You can see I have not yet cleaned it off the head of the bolt where it has squeezed out or trimmed it neat around the edges. Since it stays sticky it collects dust until covered but in my opinion if it keeps it water tight for ten or so years than I will be happy.
