Wanting to replace the old Trojan handpump and thinking about options.

A Fynspray Rocker Pump WS63 seems robust but I don't know if it will work properly in the space. The original space has the tap recessed in its own little alcove.



The Rocker Pump body should fit but I'm unsure if operating the lever is awkward. Anyone installed one?

I got tired of the hand pump, which was the same as the one you linked. They work fine, but they take ages to get any water.

My bride is very slight build and got really frustrated with filling just a kettle to make tea, so I splurged a little and got one of these.

The resulting pleasure of being able to turn a tap and get water was worth the additional expense. It's self heading, so once it has power it pumps to pressure, then will switch off until you turn the tap on. To prevent any battery drain whilst off the boat, make sure it's wired into a circuit you can isolate.

Make sure you get one of the inline cartridge filters as well. This system has been on Dulcamara over three years now, and has never once given a problem.

I got a "Galley Foot Pump" [whitworths page 55 item 68155] which I have found to be excellant.


But I noticed that when I got back from the Whitsundays last year, in the first week I came ashore,
I kept lifting my right foot to pump the foot pump every time I went to a sink and turned on a tap!

Micheal: Those electric pumps seem reliable. Certainly an option I have thought about.

Phillip: How did you install the foot pump? At floor level, there is no suitable space behind the walls. Did you have it up a bit higher?

Ahhh the advantages of a Mk 1.


You have a Mk 3 which means the floor is a lot lower than the Mk 1,
that is to accommodate the lower cabin roof, yet maintain the cabin headroom.

You will have to mount the pump inside your galley locker as low as the curve of the hull will allow.

You will need at least 100mm [4"] of horizontal distance behind your locker wall to fit the pump in at the lowest point.

On Night Cap we have the foot pump on the left hand side as one faces the sink (that is to the left of the doors of the undersink cabinet, located in the locker under the port berth). It was like this when we got the boat and thought the 'pedal' would be in way, but have never found it to be a problem. Works a treat and is easy to use. Someone who is short might find it difficult in a mark3, because the 'pedal' is high off the floor (gotto lift your foot a ways). It does give spurts of water, rather than continuous flow. In some ways pressurised system with a tap that can be opened as much or as little as one desires might be an advantage. Suggest you check out Bunnings for hose, if you need any (there is special hose to use). Whitworths/Bias when I last looked sold only rolls and Bunnings sold rolls and by the meter. I will replace the hose on our boat when time allows.

If you go the pressure pump route, don't buy the Whitworth's sink tap. They are toys snd fall apart in no time. I got a small basin tap for similar price from Reece's (big plumbing chain in Vic). It's a real grown-ups tap made of solid brass, takes a normal washer and will outlast the boat.

What has been a good handpump for you?

I have two of these in my PR25, the original, with a ball bearing to act as a one way valve, and a new one with a new system (I havent pulled the new one apart so I dont know exactly whats in it)...

But they are very very good pumps, I serviced the old one (repair kit still available from Whitworths) which didnt work when I got the boat, and now goes great, and bought a new one for the galley to replace a non servicable pump.

My only suggestion is, make sure that the area adjacent to the hole it goes through is strong, my sink flexes a little. Also the cut out is bigger than for the pump you have pictured (!!)

You can put a one way valve in place to keep the water up to the pump so you dont have to pump for ages to get water up from the tank. Works a treat.
